Getting cosmoline off a wood stock

I get the cosmoline off what will the stock look like? Will it look like unfinished wood or will there be some kind of finish on the stock?

It won't look unfinished, it should still have finish. There's too much oil, gunk & dirt in it from over the years to look unfinished. You can clean it with laquer thinner or acetone after the cosmoline comes out. That will remove a lot of the grime and it will look much lighter till you put on Tung Oil or BLO.
