Well, since the cat's out of the bag (ouch)...

Back some years ago some world travelling folks of my acquaintance wanted to be discreet in how they carried their blasters (not Stratocasters, BLASTERS) around. Some of them wound up using guitar cases. It worked well for them, just one more bunch of long haired westerners playin' rock'n'roll from all anyone could tell. Well, it would have been some real rock'n'roll all right, had they ever had reason to unzip those cases.

You still have to watch it, even with a gig bag- because people will steal what they think is a guitar as quick as anything else. Wonder how long it will be before guitar cases get regarded the same way a violin case did in the hands of someone dressed in spectator shoes and a snap-brim fedora? 8^)

Your new M4 Case: On a tip from a friend in GA, I just purchased, at a local Wal-Mart, a soft, padded electric guitar case, made by FirstAct. Fits my M4 perfectly, even with the stock extended into its normal, firing position, and with a magazine locked into the magazine well. Three additional 30-round magazines fit in the zipper, side pouch. Price is $20.00. Fits short shotguns too! My folding-stock RA-96 fits nicely into a hard, viola case, but the M-4, even with the stock all the way in, is still too long. Happily, this guitar case fits nearly any short rifle or shotgun, and it is relatively inexpensive. Makes for convenient, low-profile transport. Most Wall-Marts have them. Web Site is _www.firstact.com_ (http://www.firstact.com) . Phone is 888 551 1115. Recommended! /John

One of the wonderful things about the AR is how you can pull the receiver pins and end up with two fairly compact packages.

Not too great if you need it now, but works all right for discreet storage.

Shotguns with short mag tubes or removable extensions and folding stocks are also easier to pack into a variety of luggage when the barrel is removed.

Backpacks can be useful for this as well.

For that matter an AKMS with the magazine removed and the stock folded is very compact...

It's hard to make anything look like it's not worth stealing, especially if you keep a lock on it.

I keep my pistols in a locking case, and put stickers for a variety of punk bands all over the exterior. Then I can put all my gun company stickers onto my guitar cases and amplifiers...

Padded out a large lunch cooler with thin foam and lug that around when I don't want anyone knowing that I going to the range for a long session. It's beat up and looks like hell, but my "war chest" as my wife calls it, dosen't get a second glance from anybody that dosen't already know what is inside.

Agreed, its very hard to have anything that doesn't look valuable for concealing firearms. People will steal fishing gear, tools, golf clubs, musical insturments and electronics just as fast as they will steal guns. A cooler doesn't sound like a bad idea for pistols. I was thinking about a piece of PVC for a long-gun. I'm looking for ideas for transporting my SKS when I go (car)camping this summer, BTW.

If you are staying at a particular location for several days you can cache valuable items nearby if you don't need them immediately.

Hanging a couple hooks inside the fender well of your vehicle might work, depending on the vehicle.

The old standby, a rolled up blanket, can also work.

Just keep your gig bag in sight. Hold a rifle in your hands and NO ONE will touch your guitar inside the guitar case.

I am looking for a man... who calls himself... Bucho...

Regarding the hiding of the SKS in a vehicle, I thought about using velcro straps to strap it against the ceiling of the trunk. Far enough back from the opening, and if someone breaks in they probably won't notice it with a quick once-over.

I had an old gig bag out in the garage so I thought I coud see what I could fit. Well the Mak 90 will go in with mag inserted, no problem. If I take out the mag I can fit The mak 90, the sks, and the 870. I wrap the two rifles in towels as to not damage anything and the squeeze the 870 on top of them. It even has a handy pouch on the outside for spare mags. Now that leaves me with one real rifle case to put the scoped 10/22 in. I can fit all the pistols I dont carry on my person in a range bag and have a backpack for all the ammo that won't fit. Now I just have to figure out a way to walk carrying all this stuff.

I like Diggler's style - a real "gig bag" should come equipped with many pistolas, sawed off shotguns (a.k.a. great big pistolas), and of course Salma Hayek.

My Ishy came in a plain brown cardboard box. Best camo gun case I've ever found, just not too durable. ;)
