Hi all,

I just received some RCBS gear from a firend.

Rockchucker Press

Automatic Priming Tool (bench mounted)

Uni-flow powder measure

.270 Win Dies

My question is about the priming tool. It has two aluminum primer tubes with cotter pins. I downloaded the instructions from the RCBS site, but they are a little hard to read.

How do you tell which is for large/small primers?

Which end of the tubes are the primers loaded into?

I have only used Lee (Classic Turret) in the past so the RCBS stuff is new to me.

Thanks for any help

You load the primers closed end up into the end farthest from the cotter pins. Just look into the end and you'll see one is larger than the other. The smaller one is for small rifle and pistol primers and the larger one is for large pistol and rifle primers. It's easiest with a primer flipper, which is just a tray with a matching lid, with grooves in it. When you drop the primers in it and shake them, the grooves will tip them all up (open side up). Then you put on the lid and turn it over. When you remove the base from the lid, the primers are all aligned properly for insertion into the priming tubes.

Hope this helps.

"...which is for..." The size of the smaller end will be bigger for large primers.
You get the primers all with the inside down using a primer flipper(it's a plastic tray with a lid. Might cost you $3 if you don't have one) and 'pick them up' by just pushing the small end of the tube over them. The other end goes into the primer feeder. Fill to just below the hole for the cotter pin. The cotter pin is there to keep the primers from falling out when you put the tube into the feeder. Put the tube into the feeder, large end down, and pull out the pin. It's one of the many reloading related things that is easier to do than explain.
Be advised that RCBS will fix any problems you may have with any of their stuff, no questions asked(other than your name and address), even though the equipment is used or if you caused it. If a part breaks or goes missing, call them and they'll replace it. Usually for free including the shipping. Their customer service is legendary.
There's a how-to on their site as well. Reloading Guide I think it's called.

look at the ends of the tube and see if they are split or if they have a plastic tip on them, use that end to pick up the primers, the other end should have a pin in it to keep them from falling out when you invert it.

primers should be anvil down and the tube should grab them and hold, just keep picking them up until you get how ever many you want in the tube. then just invert the tube and stick it in the priming tool, then pull the pin to let the primers drop down in the tool.

I think you'll be able to tell which is which when you start picking up the primers. the correct one should pick up the correct primer.

hope this helps

Thanks for the replies. These tubes have the split ends not plastic. I've only used the Lee stuff before...does this primer tool work well?

"...have the split ends..." That's normal. Mine is about 30 years old and made of steel. I've always used a press mounted primer feeder. Same way of filling it. You're just priming with a separate tool. You'll be fine with it. RCBS makes top notch stuff.
