With the holiday coming up, and from what I was reading in another thread (but didn't want to hijack said thread), I was wondering - what is involved in legally giving someone a gun as a gift? Let's say for example I want to buy my Mom a .38 revolver for her birthday, I would go down to my local gun store and legally buy it, and then what?

Assuming of course both persons can legally own a weapon.

That depends on your state laws.

In many states, you just give it to her. That's it. Just like as if it was a face-to-face sale between non-licensees.

In a few (like here in PA), the transfer has to be done through a licensed dealer, so you could give it to her, but you'd then need to go to the local dealer's shop where she'd fill out the transfer paperwork and pay whatever fees are involved.

And in some states, she would need to have an FOID or purchase permit or some other paperwork first.

All depends on your state.

In MI when my kids turned 21 I bought them all their CCW gun and paid for the training...
Easy path took them to the gun store, let them pick out what fit their hand, they did the paper work, N I was just for for the money....

I did kibitz a bit, kept it to wheel guns for the low time shooters....

Do you and your mom live in the same state? If not, a dealer in her state would have to transfer (4473 form, NICS check) the revolver to her.
