Help me pick my next pistol

That hardest part is that I have owned at least one of each brand at one time or another.

I love the Glock 17 for its simplicty
I love the manual of arms of the USP
CZs are so accurate and boringly reliable.
The M and P 9mm is new, shoots fast but unproven....

I want something reliable, accurate, low maintenance and something I can abuse. Most of these guns fall near the 500 bean price range except for the USP.

Discuss as to which pistol has the most MOJO and why :)

Just got the Glock 17 a couple of weeks ago to scratch an itch for a full size 9mm. I am very pleased with the choice. The ease of breakdown and availability of parts factored in to my decision. It does not hurt that my Glock 26 can use the 17 rnd mags.

I agree, I am buying as my first guns the CZ P01, CZ75SA and the Kadet Conversion kit that will work with both of these handguns to allow me to also burn off a load of cheap .22cal to work on things like stance, trigger pull, sighting etc.

Hey Nelson,

Well, I'm sure you have pretty extensive experience with most of the platforms you've listed. Patrick's M&P is one hell of a shooter, very ergonomically friendly in the grip and one of the lowest recoiling polymer 9mms in my opinion. The stock trigger is gritty and has a long reset, but I've shot his M&P after the trigger work and it's pretty sweet.

The USP9 is a great platform, but slow for competition IMO. I tried 2 matches with it, and there were two main faults that I couldn't overcome. The The fat blocky grip made me shift my grip to release the magazine more than other pistols, and the trigger reset on USPs just plain sucks. Shooting production would be painful with the long DA, unless you planned to send it out to Bruce and Scott to get them to work on the trigger, which really needs work. Lastly, the bump on the triggerguard, after a while would slap my trigger finger. because of the long reset, the bump would always slap my finger everytime I reset the trigger, but that's probably just me.

Glock 17, well I'm sure you shot your G34 pretty damn well. To me, the main point would be pointability. If Glocks point well, then you got that covered. I've been fiddling around with the Glock platform for a little while, and just purchased one 2 days ago to try out. Glocks still have the shortest reset from a production gun that I have found. The long track record does help too.

So which one to pick? Heck, I dunno...

I recommend the HK USP whole heartedly! Since round one, I have been amazed at how easy it is to shoot them well.

go with whatever the cheapest. this is usually the outcome when people posting comparison of which gun to get.

I've got the last two and would have a hard time choosing between them.

The CZ is more accurate (in my hands) and faster on the target - but the DA/SA transition is less than ideal compared to the M&P's shots all being the same.

I'd probably get the SP-01 first, but the safety model rather than the decocker/tactical. Then an M&P for good measure.

Black Majik--the very name means you belong to the Darkside.

The Prodigal Son has returned. Welcome home, brother. ;)

45R, all the guns you've listed are fine pieces. My two cents on each:

I've handled the M&P Rich's talking about, and it's everything he says. After the trigger job, I wouldn't mind having one of those in my stable either. Only knock against it is it doesn't have Glock's track record. Yet. Same can be said of the XD, but time will tell. I'd say they're all solid designs.

I don't like the grips on HK's polymer guns. The USP is way too chunky for a 9mm. I hold high thumbs, so I don't like the fact that if I grip a little too hard, I can decock at the worst possible moment. My USP40 was a well made gun--neither the grip nor the caliber suited me, so I sold it long ago. Unless the HK45 is substantially slimmer, I'm done with HK polymers.

I have an SP-01 worked on by Matt Mink. I had the DA/SA turned into SA only (with the SA trigger), I had the safeties swapped out to the SA safeties for the bigger thumb shelf, and I had Matt do his magic on the trigger pull. After installing the comp sights, this is my most accurate 9mm gun. Cost me about $900 total, but I'd honestly put it up against any 9mm out there at any price--it's that accurate. Have not shot it competitively, however, so I don't know how it would do at speed yet. There are youtube clips of Angus Hobdell tearing through USPSA stages with his SP-01, however, so I'm sure it'll do well enough. ;)

My Glock 17 is my comp gun. With it's simplicity in design and MOA, affordability, aftermarket support, fast resetting trigger, and it's uber-reliability, I see no reason why everyone doesn't own a Glock 17. Really. Oh, wait. Now Vu has one, and Rich, and Ryan, and Ken (soon). Nevermind. Everyone DOES own one. :D And with good reason. (Really, the more I think of it, the more I'm convinced Glock's simplicity is the source of it's success. It just works. Everyone else's polymer entry just ADDS stuff like more stuff = better. KISS, remember?)

Get the Glock. Glock = MOJO. ;)

i am currently going thru the same thing, sort of. me and my g/f went looking at guns for her and both of us pretty much settled on the M&P compact 9mm. it fit her small hands and my large hands pretty well. now im trying to decide between a glock 17 or 19 for my self. :D the reliability and aftermarket has swayed me twords the glock.

I want something reliable, accurate, low maintenance and something I can abuse.
I use a G19 for all of the above. Although it still wears the stock rear sight, I have swapped out the front for a steel one (had too, the stock plastic one was beat to crap).

I dont really like it, which is why I was able to buy it NIB specificly to use for a beater. I looked at less expensive pistols (CZs mainly), but went with the glock because of magazine availability.

I've liked the CZs I've looked at, so I dont think I could toss one in my toolbox, wear it outside when doing grounds work, etc.

Glocks are the ultimate beaters. Affordable, reliable, and ugly as sin out of the box, so if it gets beat up its not a big deal.

Thanks for this thread. I am now fighting the same decison after picking up my Canadian Firearms Course manuals last night. The course instructor tried to talk me into putting a deposit on a Glock 22 (.40cal) or 17 (9mm) right then and there as these handguns fly out of his place quickly. He gets the Police Spec Glocks with the special (Triticon??) night sights mounted by the manufacturer. He quoted me $1199 CAD for either with the sights. I think I can get the gun cheaper in the USA and import it accordingly for about $750 CAD. Am I crazy? Should I put the money down on the Glock and order it here or wait and get the CZ P01 as my first gun?

first gun i bought was my sp-01. i freaking love it, never get rid of it. i have a glock 23 and its great too, but if anything ever went down, i would jump for my cz. dead on accurate, and soo controllable...

For a range gun, the SP-01 beats your other options by a wide margin. Great accuracy and insanely fast back on target thanks to all that recoil eating steel.

If you think you'll ever be CCW'ing whatever pistol you purchase, one of the plastic guns would be better (or buy a P-01). All four are pretty big for concealed carry, but the weight of the SP-01 makes it especially poor.

I've shot and owned CZs, Glocks, and M&Ps. Of these three, I vastly prefer the M&P.

Consistent trigger pull, fast reset, trigger is actually pretty good and gets better with age, good capacity, excellent ergos.

In my part of the Republic, CZs seem a little harder to find.

The 17 is one of Glocks better versions, but still somewhat bricklike.

HK, too much $ for what you get, without the CS you should expect from such a price.

The MP shoots good, feels good, looks good, and the CS is great.

Just bought a USP 9mm!!

I love the H&K USP's. I just bought a 9 mm this week to add to my .40 cal USPc. I had troubles shooting the .40 at first but then readjusted my stance. I scored a 240/250 on a timed proficency test with the 9 mm and a227 with the .40 cal. I'm a bit of a novice yet but I really wanted a gun with DA/SA triggers and a hammer.....love 'em.
