I'm taking my wife and son camping in Georgia over the July 4th weekend. We will be camping, hiking, bumming around, fishing, etc. Nothing hardcore, just relaxing.

Since I have a Florida CWP, I can concealed and open carry in Georgia. Therefore, I can take pretty much whatever I want there. I won't bother listing all my guns, but I probably have something similar to whatever anybody can recommend.

This said, what would you guys recommend?

Right now, I'm leaning toward my SP101 and nothing else. It's easy to conceal in town; it fits comfortably in an OWB holster I have for other times. It can take anything from big nasty buffalo bore loads for the woods, to more sedate personal protection rounds in town, to snake shot. It's stainless, so I don't need to worry about rain and rust. It can take anything from a black bear on down with the right ammo selection. It's reliable and won't break.

Am I being entirely reasonable? I could bring a high cap 45 or 9, or a larger 357, or you name it and I probably have it... but I can't think of why, when I can bring one gun that would do everything I need.

The old standby for hiking/camping/bear protection...etc is a .357 Mag. I don't believe this because the odds are that if you run into problems with animals, it will be of the two-legged variety. I'd go for a hi-cap 9mm or 40S&W loaded with +P rounds. Bring bear spray, too.

My SP101 357 is what my son usually carries on his camping trips-He just got a LCR 357, so I guess he'll take that one now.

When I bought my 3" SP101, it was bought specifically because of hiking.

I really miss that gun. I think the 3" SP101 is just about ideal for hiking/camping.

Any of those you mentioned will be fine, I usually take the 10 short when I'm Summer camping with the family and bring along the light wieght Judge for trail walking and hiking...The only thing you need to watch out for is the copperheads and rattlesnakes and maybe a cotton mouth if your camping south of Atlanta. I OC all over Ga State Parks never had an issue with any LE.

Hope you and your Family have a great trip here in GA!

After getting back from overseas, I spent a lot of time in North Georgia camping with my niece and nephew.

I was much more concerned with two legged critters that four. Never had any issues though.

Throw a long gun in the car and you should be set with the Ruger.

Amicalola Falls and Brasstown Bald were our two favorites.

The SP is a good choice for an all around carry gun while camping. Where are you headed?

Take one that, instead of a back sight, has as big a FAN as possible mounted blowing air back into you face.

98 degrees today in the burbs of ATL.

Have fun and welcome.

I don't know where you are going but I just thought I'd give a word to the wise. Carry is legal in most State Parks in Georgia however there are some parks that Georgia leases from the Corps of Engineers. These places are off limits for carry. This link has a list of the parks that are off limits because they are on federally owned land in post 2 of the thread. http://www.georgiapacking.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=42162

No legged critters are going to be more of a threat than 2 or 4 legged critters. Something to think about. CCI makes 357 birdshot.

Snakes are the biggest threat? Seriously?

If they don't hide before you get to them and you see them before they strike (if they were going to strike in the first place) then go around them.

If you don't see them until after they strike, then no gun or snakeshot load will help you.

If you insist on killing snakes you happen to see, then use a stick.

Under the same circumstances I would take my 3" M 60 .357.
Accordingly your 101 would be ideal in my view.
Have a good time,
Regards,
Jerry
