Had a great day today in the Borderland. My wife and I went shooting with my best friend and his girl today, and found out that my High Standard Pointer (Gibson-branded Flite King) is better, smoother, and more accurate than my Mossberg 500 (or so it seems). Pistol-wise, my wife's RIA 1911-CS held its own against a Taurus 5-round .357mag 3'' and an XD40 on paper and in our informal accuracy test- nailed a small target twice in a row at 40 yards and made my buddy give up on it. Not sure which one is better, but that Taurus's grips sure soaked up recoil nicely.

Rifle-wise, my Mosin-Nagants kicked the crap out of the 30-30, but that's probably the lack of a bayonet. Old tires really don't stand a chance against cold steel.

The best thing is that his girl is probably going to be getting herself a 1911 or an XD. That and my wife wants another 1911 (she loved the XD's night sights, and wants a 1911 with them).

I think I'm the only one in our little circle that liked the M-Ns the most, even if they did throw fire.

Good days like that just fuel the fire! Sounded like fun to me. My wife rarely shoots and doesn't like big pistols when she does.

My wife openly scoffs at buying a 9mm for her- quote "I like the bigger rounds, it's just more controllable, and the 1911 is pretty much perfect for me."

an ex of mine (all 5 foot nuthin of her at 99 lbs) used to like to exclaim that she *couldn't* use a pistol smaller than a .45- "I've gotta be sure that anything I have to shoot stays shot!"

You're not alone in having a soft spot for the Mosin Nagant. Out all the guns I have I actually like my Nagant the best, it's inexpensive, accurate enough for me (at this point in my shooting career :) ), tough and inexpensive to shoot.
