Tam once put it that
The going price for a firearm is
What someone is willing to pay for it crossed with
What someone is willing to sell it for.
The book is a nice reference, but doesn't necessarily match up to the above.

That last sentence is not strictly true. I does match up to what that point was for others, and so is a good handy guide to use to know what something should bring. Same for the auction sites, they give you an idea of what something has sold for so you know if you're deal is good, average, or bad.
