I know we have a brazillion holster makers listed as a sticky, but can anyone recommend a common brand that makes a good, thumb break IWB for a full size auto? I'm currently using a cheap nylon one and it's just not what I want to use...

There are very few IWB holsters with a thumb break. Those that are available, that I can think of off the top of my head are...

Andrews "MacDaniel II" http://www.andrewsleather.com/traditional.htm

Ted Blocker has a few models http://www.tedblockerholsters.com/products.cfm?ci=F9A50A23-0021-1F42-D93E81C0625E6569

The Simply Rugged "Tribute" can be configured to be worn IWB http://shop.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Tribute.cfm?item_id=158&parent=669

I think Don Hume has some IWB models with a thumb break http://www.donhume.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=65_5&zenid=a4p5l0lui0443af09u1i9tnoq1

If your only holster experience is with the nylon holster, you may not realize the retention provided by quality leather or kydex holster, without a thumb break.

The number of threads started by guys asking how to "break in" their leather holsters, because they can't draw their pistol out without giving themselves a "weggie" is a very long one. I tend to think "weggie" level of retention is usually sufficient for most concealed carry use. Most kydex holsters can be adjusted to provide a similar level of retention, if you want that much.

If you need more retention than that, I'd make sure to avoid a holster with a clip on attachment as the clip attachment would probably come off your belt in those instances.

I'm happy to read this thread. From the point of view of the armed civilian, perhaps an IWB holster with a thumb break makes no sense, but believe me that it does make sense from the point of view of a law enforcement officer. I seldom work in plain clothes but when I have to, I carry OWB because I still haven't found an IWB holster that I like and that has a thumb break. When you have to roll on the floor with a suspect you don't want them to be able to get to your gun by just pulling it.

I like the Andresleather one ;).

I bought an Andrews iwb holster from the owner decades ago for a 2" j frame. It works fine until I sit down and when I do the gun will not come out no matter how hard I pull. Needless to say I don't nor will I ever use it, I'm just saying.

If you are referring to the metal band that keeps the holster "open" yes I do know.

The problem with this holster is that when I sit down it closes enough to prevent the gun from being drawn. I much prefer Desantis for a revolver.

Now as someone that has a box full of old holsters the most comfortable IWB holster I've ever worn is the Crossbreed line. I have 2 of the Deluxe line one for a 1911 compact the other for a PT111 pro and bought my wife one for the PT111 Pro that she carries left handed. I've actually fallen asleep riding in a car while wearing it as it just fits perfectly. I put my gun on in the morning with my pants and wear it till they come off at night.

I can't say enough good things about the Galco Royal Guard. I've had mine for over 17 years and have carried my Gov't Model in it almost everyday and it is still going strong. Sits low at the right angle of cant to make it blend with the line of my body and is invisible under almost everything I wear. Galco makes a great product.. . .Rudy
