Over the weekend, I found a local shop with some rebuilt Garands. The wood is brand new, the barrel is a new Krieger, and the finish has been re-parkerized. They wanted $1179 each for them. Is that a good price?
Depends on who built them? and what they did to them.
If all the parts are good to go and you start figuring all they have in it and what the labor cost it is fair. lets look at it this way.
rifle low end rack grade from cmp : $422
kreiger (not criterian) $300
stock $100?
chambering and fitiing barrel $150
park $100
total $1072
Now I may be off a little depending on who built it and what the parts cost but the reputation of the builder means alot.
Iam in colorado also so curious who and where you saw them? two of the best here are hickmans rifles and dave sullivan
I'm afraid I have to give the answer "it depends" elktrout.
Is that a Krieger match barrel, or is it a Criterion barrel (Criterion is a Krieger spin-off company that makes OEM barrels)?
Is has the stock been fitted and/or bedded to the rifle?
Has the rifle been accurized in any way?
If this is just an M1 that has been cobbled together from parts for use as a "shooter", then $1k is a bit high. If the rifle has been accurized by a reputable gunsmith, then $1k isn't a bad price at all.
If ya just want a shooter that won't really gain value and was properly refurbished with quality parts may be fair. I would buy a correct grade CMP for that price though. If and its a big if you can get one after the hoop jumping
Manufacturer name on the received is Springfield Armory. Serial number was 2,055,xxx (don't remember the last three). I am not sure on the Krieger v. Criterion, although the tag on the gun said it has a Krieger barrel. I will check with the shop this week and post my findings. Anything else I should ask?
The gun was refurbished by James River Armory. It is a Criterion barrel. Their website claims that the gun has been fitted with a new wooden stock, cartouched (did I spell that correctly?) to match the serial number, and a new butt plate. Their price on the website is $1149 for what looks to be the same gun I found at the local shop.
