The local shop is out of IMR 3031 and I am looking for a replacement. I am loading the .45-70 with 405 grain Missouri Bullets. I usually load the IMR at 45grains. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Reloader 7, IMR-4064, IMR-4895, H-4895, Varget, Benchmark.

None are directly comparable to IMR-3031 load data, but are close enough for goobermint work.

Just pick what is available then go to the reloading manuals to get data for it.

Try Accurate Arms AA5744. As noted earlier, it was called XMP 5744, who knows what suffix Accurate Arms will use in the future.

This powder is relatively bulky, gives very even velocities in this big case. As per AA loading data, these loads are OK for blackpowder cartridges.

Shoots well too.

Thanks for all the replies. He just got a case of Varget so that what's I got. The IMR will be in Monday, and it's only 2 pounds. I got dibs on that as well.

When 3031 was unavailable I've found 4198 (both IMR and Hodgdon) to be a good substitute. Other powders will work but 4198 is the powder most like 3031 I've tried. I've heard Reloader 7 and 10 work well too.

Since you obviously like IMR powders, so do I, I'd look for IMR 4895 or H-4895, these are pretty much my go-to powders for .308.:) I settled on IMR-4895 because I was able to get 16 lbs of it from Widener's.:) H-4895....no dice.:(

H322 usually is very close to IMR3031. I've used it in .30/30, .223, and .45/70 with excellent results.

H4895 is a bit slower, but also gives superior results to IMR3031 in most instances. One exception however is the .257Roberts with 87-100gr bullets.

At one time, Remington used IMR3031 in their factory ammo for the Roberts. It delivers excellent accuracy and velocity with the Roberts.

Varget however, is excellent in the .45/70. I liked 55.0gr under a 405gr HollowBase from my Marlin 1895G, for nearly 2,000fps. Kicks worse than a aquaintances MkX Mauser in .458mag however........
