I liked my WASR ok, but then again, I paid $350 for it. But Okie is right...$600 seems to be going rate now. Heck, I sold mine for $550 a few months ago. So I think WASR's are hardly worth the money these days, when you can get a Saiga. Not to say the WASR isn't a good rifle... it really is, but there are so many more options out there for an AK around the same price, that it makes the hassle and risk of a WASR seem like, well... a hassle and risk lol.
They're better... If you can stay patient and find a rifle that is in good working order, it'll serve you just fine.
You want to check...
- That it's actually a 10/63 (says on the left side of the front trunion).
- Straight front sight and gas blocks... even the best are canted a little.
- Make sure rust (and chances are there will be some rust) is only surface rust, nothing deep.
- Check rivets, and make sure they're nice and round, and the receiver isn't "dented" or "sunk" in around them.
- You probably won't find an exceptionally smooth one, but some actions are smoother than others. Be sure to try them all out.
- They all seem to have decent bores, lately, but check it out to be safe.
- If it comes with a bayonet, make sure it fits the rifle.
- If it comes with magazines, make sure they don't wobble too much.
- If it doesn't come with a mag, bayonet, cleaning kit, or sling... tell them to include it.
