Goose and Duck Hunting

Hey ya'll. I've never been goose or duck hunting and recently moved to NE Kansas. I have an older2-3/4" only Wingmaster with a fixed modified choke and was wondering how many others out there hunt geese or duck with the same type of setup. Most the guys I know who hunt geese and duck swear by a 3" magnum loading and have shotguns to match. I like to think I'm a pretty good shot and was wondering how effective my setup will be.

Also, if I were to install a 3" chambered barrel on my shotty would I then be able to shoot magnum loads?

You cant mount a 3" barrel on a 2 3/4" receiver and have it work. Non toxic shot means steel, or other more expensive shot. Steel really cries out for a 3"-3.5" chamber. You really need to consider hevi-shot or bismuth. Hevi-shot while very expensive, would fit your gun. It is heavier than lead so your 2.75" chamber is no handicap, and it patterns as tight or tighter than lead , so your modified barrel is good. Be sure to pattern your gun to find the shot size your gun likes (4s for duck, 2s or 4s for geese). While hevi-shot is expensive it is cheaper option than a new shotgun.

I know a guy who takes geese with a 20 gauge so I don't think you are handicapped there. You just have to keep in mind how far away they are, let them get in nice and tight to the decoys then take them. If you diced that you really like it then you can invest in a 3" gun.

Shooting Duck and Geese is way different than targets, they fly a lot faster. It will take you a little bit but you'll figure out how far to lead them. A tighter choke for steel usually is worse since steel is tighter than lead any way, it has a good possibility of blowing your pattern apart.
