Got a Good buy at Auction today

Was at a auction today and picked what i thought was a pretty good deal.

Its a French Berthier 1907/1915 rifle. Got some rust freckling by the rear sight and a small piece missing out of stock. Its very dirty and bore will need a really good cleaning. But i think it will clean up nice.

I paid $80 for it.

If you can't get it shooting at the very least you have a pretty sweet wall-hanger. I don't recall ever seeing one of those before. I had to look it up. Guess it replaced the Lebel. Wonder if it was a take-home souvenir for a doughboy? Good work!

I got me a wall-hanger, just haven't hung it yet. 1895 Chilean Mauser. From what I've read the steel used in the barrels wasn't real good back then. I don't think I'd dare try to put a round down it. It's gorgeous though.

I am looking into shooting, as soon as i can clean the bore and see what the condition is under all the grime.

My guess it was a WWI bring back.

No one loads factory ammo for 8mm lebal that i know of. I have a box allready from Gads cutom cartiage's, that i got for a berthier carbine i bought last year. $18 for a box of twenty. I don't think thats too bad. If you think thats pricey try pricing 450/577 martini henery ammo. I don't reload, so i have to get the hard to find ammo from custom places.

Cllips are easier to find. The 5 rounds are alot more common. During WWI the french figured out a 3 shot rifle compared to a 5 shot GEW98 was not a good thing. They added a extention to newer models of rifles and carbines for 5 shots. My carbine is 5 shot while this rifle is 3 shot. The gun will work with a 5 round clip but the clip will stick out the bottom. I have my eye on ebay for a 3 round clip. 5 rounds are pretty common on the auction sites.
