On September 7th I was at home and was bored so I sent one of the "defeat the assault weapon ban" prewritten emails(I'm not a good letter writer) to my representatives. Not thinking anybody would return anything I got this email today from Senator Harry Reid. It may have been prewritten and carbon copied (like my email) but gave me a warm feeling this morning.

September 10, 2004

Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to
the reauthorization of the assault weapons ban. I appreciate
hearing from you.

As you know, Congress banned the transfer, possession, or
manufacture of semiautomatic assault weapons and high capacity
ammunition feeding devices for ten years. The ban will expire on
September 13, 2004. I voted against the original ban when it came
before the Senate in 1993, and I also voted against an attempt
earlier this year to attach the reauthorization of the ban to the
Lawful Commerce Protection Act (S. 659/ S. 1805).

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Frank Lautenberg
(R-NJ) have recently introduced legislation (S. 1034, S. 1431, and
S. 2109) to reauthorize the assault weapons ban. While the Senate
Judiciary Committee is currently reviewing these measures, please
be assured that I will oppose these measures should they come
before the full Senate.

As a gun owner, I believe that law abiding citizens have a
constitutional right to keep and bear arms. We must work to
protect this right by enforcing gun safety laws that keep guns away
from terrorists, criminals, and illegal immigrants. The rights of
responsible gun owners should not be compromised by individuals
who use firearms to commit crimes. The vast majority of Nevadan
gun owners use their guns safely, and I will work in a bipartisan
fashion to preserve their rights.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts
with me. For more information about my work for Nevada, my
role in the United States Senate Leadership, or to subscribe to
regular e-mail updates on the issues that interest you, please visit
my Web site at http://reid.senate.gov. I look forward to hearing
from you in the near future.

My best wishes to you.

Sincerely,

HARRY REID
United States Senator
