My Benchmade AFCK Axis plain edge in D2 arrived yesterday. It is easily the best production folder I have ever owned, and it just might be the last folder I will ever buy barring a loss or something even better for the money spent (doubtful). I have already spine wacked it as hard as I could against a railroad tie I have while wearing a leather gauntlet and the blade didn't move at all. It also came with a pretty darn sharp factory edge.

I covet no more and my old AFCK liner lock is now my wife's purse EDC.

Do you have any opinions on Benchmade's combo-edge blades? I'm looking to replace my aging Ascent.

I personally like combo edge blades...most of mine are plain edge, and other than looks I think full serrated ones are not good for edc...there are just some things serrated can do better than plain edge.

Yes I have an opinion as a matter of fact.

My AFCK is a "combat"/self-defense EDC folder exclusively. I do not use it on cardboard, fruit, fingernails, screws, or anything else. I have a LM WAVE and a few SAKs with nicely serrated blades for cutting web belts or that other kind of mundane stuff. I never carry just one knife.

I do not like partially serrated blades because I find the serrations to be a PITA to sharpen relative to when I can just leather strop the whole plain-edged blade and keep the edge nice and razor sharp.

Got D2? YES! It is a great knife, no, a SUPERB knife! And it even smells good, too. (Don't ask, it's a weird idiosyncrisy; I sniff my knives---closed, of course.) I have to open this knife at least three times a day to look at that blade. This thing shaves like a finely honed straight razor. The Axis AFCK is a classic. Never had a knife that feels this good in the hand. AFCK=A Frickin' Cool Knife! And AFCK=Already Forgotten Crkt Knives.

Yup, D2 is a great knife steel, no question. I've had several by different makers (Simonich, Dozier) and production pieces (CRKT, Benchmade) and all were very sharp and easy to resharpen. A very good steel for a working knife, it's been around for years, but still holds it's own against the newer steels o' the month.

i got some D2 in my pocket too, only mine is a BM 710-02. very sharp knife, i almost cut the tip of my finger off :what: when i first got it.
