I tweaked my Hodgdon Benchmark load to precisely 34.8 gr under a Nosler 50 gr orange ballistic tip varmint bullet.
After the first two holes from a lead sled at 100 yds seen on the left of this 7 in splatter target, I adjusted my Mueller APV scope atop my Ruger M77 Hawkeye. 5 hole cloverleaf just north and the two level to the right were Remington Factory accutips V-boats.
I'd say that Mr Groundhog is in trouble out to 300+ yards. The range was a public range and farthest targets are only 100 yds but this looks right on with my handloads at 200.

I had an old Mauser M98 action with a .22-250 Shaw barrel screwed into it some time back which was one of the most accurate varmint rifles I ever owned. It would gobble up just about any powder available without any change in needed accuracy. I mostly shot whistle pigs which are a somewhat large target so it didn't make much difference which powder I used. I generally shot 55gr bullets through it. Very good medicine for ground hogs.

I was working up some loads with new powders, to use up 3 500-ct Boxes of 40 Gr Hornady V-Max.

I was pretty impressed with IMR 8208 in .22-250, with light bullets. I settled on the Minimum load with that powder (well, 36.1 Gr instead of 36.0) still 4000 fps. Target below. IMR lists the max at 39 Gr. I included the chrono tape of a 38.9 Gr load...check out the velocities.

I switched to Varget and a couple other common powders that have current published data available for 52 gr. and 55 gr. bullets. Accuracy has been great, so I never considered trying anything different or more specifically. using old out dated data.

But about a year or so back, maybe not quite that far back, I ran out of my usual powders, and needed to load some 52 gr. and 55 gr. Sierra'a. So I dug through my log book and found a load I took from my old Speer #10 I used up through the early 90's using IMR-4350. I went with it, and the results have been just as good as when I ran then in a Browning A Bolt II and also in a 700 from even earlier on.

I really think I'll stick with this IMR-4350 load, it's been easier to find 4350, it gives me just as good velocity, if not slightly better than Varget, H4895 or IMR4895, and accuracy is also comparable. The only thing, and not necessarily a bad thing, is I have to use CCI-250's with it.

I'm also thinking of taking 4166 for a test drive, it looks to be a pretty good powder for this, and so does CFE223, though pressures are up there pretty high, which may not work so well with the OAL style I often work with. And since I'm a velocity junkie when accuracy can be obtained with it, I'm temped to check out 8208 with those 40 grainer's.

When it works, it just works.

I am lovin to hear this, I'm working with a new cartridge and it can be frustrating. But hearing someone found their load keeps me looking forward.
Thanks for sharing.

I just finished loading 85 cartridges with the 34.8 gr Benchmark under 50 gr Nosler Ballistic tip Varmint and ran out of bullets. I did have the same powder under Hornady FTX 50 gr and they shot very well too but not as good as the Nosler's.
So I finished loading what 65 cases I had left with the FTX. My OAL is 2.348 with CCI 200 primers. Now this works in my 1-14 twist Ruger M77 Hawkeye.
It doesn't mean it will work in another rifle but if somebody wants to go shoot them groundhogs, I am ready.
