As some of you may recall, I purchased a ruger p95DC (decocker) in the opening days of october. About a week after purchase I took it to the range and it had issues, failed to feed the round fully in (and I was not limpwristing).
The Gander Mountain smith testfired it, had the same problems and polished the extractor (they are a ruger certified repair center) Took it to the range again about two weeks later, problem was lessened but still present
Sent back to ruger, they had it for 40 days, sent it back supposedly fixed (foreshadowing)
Took it to range, again, same problem, about 3-5 failures in 50 rounds. (fired 150, of 3 different ammo types)
Took it back to gander, gunsmith and 1 shop employee testfired it, reported failure on the order of 25 out of 50.
I called up ruger and asked them what the deal was, got the run around, eventually had to go all the way up to the VP, who authorized replacement. Called gander, they shipped it out march 6th. So wednsday march 12th I call, almost a week has gone by, to me there is a strong possibility it "just showed up today, was about to call you!" of getting the gun checked in and replacement sent out. Yes, Gander sent it march 6, no gun back from ruger. I call ruger. Yes, they have my gun, however, there is some paperwork that needs to be done. Apparently they were planning on waiting until they got the gun and THEN sending ruger the paperwork :banghead: They can't send gun until Gander sends back paperwork. So I cut to the VP again. He is polite and at least has been able to get some progress going. VP does some checking, yes, they have some paperwork, but asks me when I can get to gander next. I tell him I can go there tomorrow. He says there is some paperwork that I need to sign and that I should go there and sign it and have them fax it back. (it sounded like the paperwork had just been mailed out by ruger...but I figured if it had not yet arrived, I could have ruger fax gander a new copy, so I went armed with the phone number to ruger and VP's name)
Get to gander about 1pm. "Hey, Ruger says I need to come here sign some form, and then you fax it back to them and then they can send out the replacement gun"
Gunsmith's response "i have no paperwork for you to sign"
Me :banghead::banghead::banghead:
We find out that ruger had faxed paperwork over at 9 am, but it went somewhere else, so gunsmith tracks it down. Turns out that gander buys from distributor so Ruger doesn't have Gander's FFL on file. BUT...there is nothign that I need to sign. I think humm, somethign isn't right here. He can see nowhere for me to sign. I insist we call up Ruger for clarification, and ask for the VP.
VP says yes, I told him there was some paperwork he needed to sign (hence him asking when I could go to gander) but he doublechecks with underlings.
Turns out VP misunderstood one of his underlings (probably a case of 'hey what paperwork is this akodo guy telling me that you told him needs to be done' and underling says 'all that needs to happen is we get the signature and it faxed back' refering to gander, but VP misinterprets it as refering to me' ) This makes much more sense than company policy of having owner make a special trip to the store to sign documents.
So, totally wasted trip, except I think about how long that fax was sitting in the wrong inbasket, and probably only got faxed because they knew I was coming down the next day, and I would outpace the USPostal copy. So, my trip got all the paperwork where it needed to be probably a few days sooner than it would have without the trip.
So, form is signed, and faxed back to Ruger. VP asks about the gunsmith's testfiring, he confirms that the gun was crazybad even after being returned from repair center. Ruger is 'building the gun as we speak' because they don't have any anymore (i don't know if they are phasing out the P95 now that they have a new ruger semiauto) and that they are 'upgrading it to a newer version anyways' I am aware that mine didn't have a rail but most rugers coming out now have a rail carved into the polymer, which is what they are talking about.
I get a call last night from VP, he is having the gun overnighted to Gander mountain.
I go in there today and pick it up. I have been told that the exact model is no longer made, as mine was the pre-rail version. I expect to see the same exact gun, except rail. Nope, they send me a regular version (safety and decocker) This is a bit suprising that they would swap features, but really I don't care. I accept it, even if the model is not quite the same. I do notice that no magazine loading tool is included, so I make Gander take one out of a different ruger P95 box and give it to me. they can worry about ruger sending them a replacement.
So, after 5 months, almost 6 months, many payments of rangefees to test supposedly fixed product, many boxes of ammo fired in failure, I finally have a ruger handgun again. I will test it tomorrow, and I really hope it all works. I am glad that the VP was able to expedite things at the end, but it should never have gotten that far behind.
repeatedly when mentioning these troubles, I have been told 'oh ruger will make it right, and for all the hassle they will throw in an extra magazine or something' Nope. who knows, they may send me something in the mail, but as of now, they almost sent me away with less parts (magloader) than I sent in. I also find it humourous that the ruger box is supposed to have a hole where you can lock it, but this was never drilled out. I don't care, but i do find it a bit humourus, does indicate that they were grabbing parts and banging that gun together to make a deadline. I am glad they overnighted it, but then I think after 5 months, they need to shave days off any place they can.
I don't think I will ever buy another ruger though.
