gp100 conversion

I want to have a ruger gp100 converted to a 5 shot 44 special, but unfortunately clements customs no longer offers this service, anyone know who might?

Haven't heard of anyone else. The reason Clements doesn't anymore is due to the work and costs involved. If I recall correctly such work was in the $3000 range. Only other 'smith I could think might attack such a idea is Bowen.

I bought a Taurus 44c 5 shot 2.5" bbl. Shoots mag and special. It's NOT a Ruger. Or you can get the new 4" Redhawk. I think the cost factor outweighs the benefit of retrofitting a GP to something it was never intended upon being.

Forget the model number but Smith used to make a 5 shot .44 special with 3" barrel on the L frame. If I ever see another at a decent price it will come home with me.

I had one. Can only shoot up to 200 gr bullets per manufacturer. Sorry, I had the 296.

Really? There's a .44 Special bullet less than 240 grains?
Meanwhile, I had a 696 and it was good, but they're still pretty big, heavy guns. I traded it for something I'd shoot more.
As a carry gun, I'd go for a lightweight Commander or Officers before Id haul around a 696. Slimmer, lighter, more bullets. So, I didn't really have a use for it.
But that's just me.

gemeni customs caan't do that kind of work unfortunately, I just wanted something different is all and I just like that gp100 so much I wanted to have it in the 44 but it looks like I will have to make do with something else

Good defensive ammo these days is constructed and loaded to perform quite well, and to penetrate to similar depths in test media, while being loaded with low-flash powders. In the early 1980's, I would have really wanted to get my hands on a compact all-steel .44 SPL revolver, but today I feel just as well-armed with an SP101 in .357 magnum. While the custom .44 would have a higher cool factor, the SP101 is entirely practical, which being more compact.

Now, for something really special in .44 Special, that is obtainable, take at look at single action sixguns. Or, if DA is vital, keep looking at the larger dealer websites and the online auctions for pre-owned customs by Clements and ASP.

The concept of using a 3" 44mag and shooting 44 specials is a better option than most people realize. My 3" Smith 629 is only about 1/8" thicker across the cylinder and because of the larger holes in the barrel and cylinder actually weighs less than a GP-100 in .357.

I consider them close enough to be in the same size category. Dropping down to the "K" frame Smiths will make a difference. If you can carry a "L" frame Smith or a GP-100 a short barreled "N" frame is not much harder.

I was going for the cool factor more then anything (though i would like to add a 44 special to my line up) I'll probably end up buying a 296 if I can find one to fill that niche for the time being.

Look for a Taurus 441 or 431 or 445. you could try a Charter Arms bulldog. Or look in to a Rossi 720.
