After it was announced Eagle Imports would no longer be importing Grand Power, I quickly made my way over to Buds and put a P40L 10mm on Layaway. (Just about) 90 days later, after a nice Memorial day commission paycheck, I paid it off. It was delivered to my local FFL today.
After bringing it home, here are my initial thoughts-
The mag release is so stiff I got a blood blister on my thumb the first time I used it. It may be "ambi", but functionally, it's a nightmare. It is marginally easier to push with the slide open.
The double action trigger is heavy, but smooth. The decocker also functioning as a DAO switch is unique. Do I have any use for it? Not really. Good for practice, I suppose.
I don't like that I cannot decock it and put it on safe as I can my Berettas. I know, I know...a manual safety is "going to get me killed". The weight of the trigger in double action probably makes the safety an unnecessary redundancy, but I like what I like.
Contrary to internet lore, you absolutely can get 14 rounds in the mag. You can also insert said fully loaded mag with a closed slide & one in the chamber. We'll see how well it feeds/functions like that soon...
Damn, that single action trigger is nice. Very nice.
The trigger itself is plastic. It feels cheap. After feeling a metal trigger heat up (my since departed Arsenal Strike One...), I'm fine with the plastic trigger.
this thing is a pain in the butt to reassemble. I sincerely hope this thing functions reliably without frequent cleaning because I'm not going to want to have to reassemble it too often.
Fit and finish are above average. The barrel is beautifully polished. I'd bet my last nickel the slide is nitrided/tennifer. As previously mentioned the mag release is a bear as is the slide release (so much so my wife cannot actuate it).
The grip feels good in hand. I don't like overly aggressive texturing (the CZ P10C is too much for my liking) but I don't want the pistol slip sliding in my hand. Let's say this has more than a Glock, less than an FN509? Good enough. It also feels much slimmer than I'd expect from a gun giving me 14+1 rounds of 10mm. Nice...
Lastly, the sights are metal, standard 3 dot affairs. Would I prefer night sights? Yeah. For the $800 OTD I paid, these will do. Not a lot of aftermarket options.
My next day off is Monday. I've got 150 rounds of Sig FMJ Ammo ready to test 'er out. If she's reliable, I'll be ordering a holster.
If not...hmm... Not a single one of these available on Gunbroker at the moment. Timing is key.
