Great Hunting Season

This has been one of the most enjoyable hunting seasons I've had in years. Even though I wasn't able to get out as much as I usually do because of technical difficulties with my old body, I've had a lot of fun. I'm not sure what was different for me. It wasn't actually much different than usual, but just special, I guess. I can't really put my finger on it.

I have let several young bucks go. It was most enjoyable watching them. I called one in that stood at the bottom of my ladder stand for several minutes. A big bodied four pointer came by and I watched him eat leaves that had fallen from the trees. He looked right at me with a big leaf in his mouth sticking out both sides. Wish I'd had a camera. I walked up on two small bucks sniffing a little cleared out place where I had sat a few days before. I guess they thought it was a scrape. One of them rubbed his head all over the leaves hanging over the spot. I hunted the same ridge every day I went except 2 and saw deer every time but once.

I've mostly hunted alone in my life, but I spent most days hunting with my new neighbor who has become a great friend. He made his first bow kill this year which was neat. I made my first crossbow kill, and took a 9 pointer and a doe with my Marlin 30/30. And though taking each one was special in its own way, it wasn't any kill that defined the season. And to top it off, yesterday evening I got to take my first shot at a deer with my .41 Ruger. It was a doe at 20 to 25 yards away. I had to shoot left handed (I'm right handed, but have practiced shooting my pistol with the left). The red dot stayed right on target, and everythig felt real good as I shot. I missed though. I hit a small sapling which I guess threw off the bullet. No hair, no blood. But you know what? It was fun, man!

I still have late bow and muzzleloader season to hunt if I wish, but I don't think going will make my season any more complete. I guess this sounds silly, but hey, I had a good time and thought I'd share. I certainly hope all of you had as enjoyable season as I have.

I hope this isn't one of those things where you hear about these people having the greatest day of their life and then they croak! :D
