I have a .54 percussion with the 1-60" twist round ball barrel. This rifle is, indeed, a GREAT Plains Rifle. Very accurate and the closest looker to an actual Hawken within its price range. And fun! What have you got?
I have the same as you Sir Galahad, and your post reminded me I have to take it to the range next week. It hasn't been out in a while and I need to sniff in some of that black powder.
Haven't shot it yet :banghead: My folks got me the kit for christmas and have me waiting for a weekend when they can go with me to shoot it.
Glad their interested but I want to shoot it NOW :banghead:
Great Plains Rifle .50 flintlock, right hand. The barrel is currently in Lyman's hands, due to bad machining in the grooves resulting in scaling and pits in the steel. I'm waiting for the warranty guys to get back to me with a new barrel.
I have to say that when I did shoot it, it had excellent lock time for what I expected from seeing previous flintlocks. The triggers aren't bad either.
I have a .50 flintlock that I built from the kit. I got this way because it was $60 cheaper than the complete rifle, but I spent another $200 in tools and materials to finish the kit along with 2 months worth of free time, but everyone has to have a hobby
It shoots great with .018" pillow ticking, .490 round balls over an 80 gr. charge of FFG. I had to ream the flashhole out just a bit to make the ignition a bit more reliable. Its my first black powder rifle and overall I'm very pleased with it.
Lyman "Trade Rifle" in .50 Flintlock. Haven't shot it yet, but probably in the nest couple of weeks. Indoor range hung up when I called to ask about shooting it there.
