KC:

I'm Greek, have a lot of family back there, and have been there many times.

We Greeks are an interesting bunch. Take the most stubborn person you've ever met, multiply him by several times, and that's probably the most easygoing Greek you'll find. :D

We can send unarmed security and STILL not have problems; the Med. Fleet will be close by w/F-18As; we will have spyplanes and battle-guidance planes up; a battalion or several of Marines will be in cruisers in ports all over Greece; and we will have the Israelis, who WILL be armed even if the Mossad has to temporarily swallow its guns (retrieval is a bit messy) to get them in-country.

But I still don't like the plan.

Archer: uhhh, are you denying that our wonderful fedgov slaughtered innocent civilians at Waco and Ruby Ridge? If so, then I'd wager most of the people on this board are deluded just like Bob Wright.

I've never heard of an F-18 being used in a hostage or assassination situation before.

Close air support doesn't work too well when targets and friendlies are in the same room.

I'm a Marine recruit and I love the Corps, but we can't respond in seconds. If some nut job opens up on a crowd, you wanna wait a few hours for the Marines to arrive?

And you think their primary concern is the safety of American athletes?

Your points are valid if a coup occurs. Otherwise they are pretty useless.

Certainly not. I know well what happened in those places.

Nor am I asking that we have Lon Horiuchi on hand in my competition venue performing protective services next summer, either.

But unless you too are walking around with U S A on the back of your competition uniform in a potentially dangerous foreign environment, perhaps you should not judge or tell me how I should feel about the armed presence of US Secret Service Agents in that specific situation.

Been there, done that, found it comforting.

(By the way, I don't recall any involvement of the USSS in connection with the incidents you mention. That's the trouble with using a wide brush when painting.)

Just to play devil's advocate;

how would you feel if the govts of all the Olympic participants wanted to have heavily armed teams in the US?

Russia, yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey, etc.

drjones, that would be fine with me.

Everyone *should* be able to buy an mp5 or rem700 with no paperwork anywhere in this country. I dunno about letting any other country's entire security team into the venue with guns, but if there were a hostage situation, armed security teams from the affected country(s) ought to be nearby. If any country has particularly good snipers, the U.S. should clear them to be in the venue during the competition. Same should be done in Greece.

Did Israel have armed agents on-site during the SLC winter olympics?

I'm mostly with Archer here; I would like to see the actual participants make the call to withdraw if the U.S. security detail, in light of terrorist acts since 9/11, is to be disarmed.

By the way, Archer; how'd you do?
