Wait, So I'm clear. Could I have an unloaded semi without a mag in it with the slide locked back and carry a magazine in my pocket. So if I needed a gun I could pop the mag in the gun and release the slide and whammo have a loaded gun. Just curious.

The weapon must be unloaded and in a belt holster. The magazine/s cannot be concealed in a pocket. They can be carried in a mag carrier on your belt. However, you can cram your pockets with as many speed loaders and loose rounds as will fit, if you OC a revolver.
Carrying in a holster only applies to firearms that can be concealed. A legal rifle or shotgun can be carried slung on your shoulder or across your back as long as it's not loaded.

Given the legal choices of 1.) an unloaded gun or 2.) No Gun my choice is crystal clear. An unloaded gun.

I think of all of the major shootings (Columbine, MacDonalds, etc.) and if somebody had had an unloaded weapon and some ammo in their pocket or mag holster, the death tolls might have been much lower.

^ they do, and this post is suspicious. I am visiting CA right now, and became very familiar with laws. Transporting guns to said event also requires it being unloaded and in a locked box in a trunk seperate from all ammo.

Yup, no matter, we hear people getting killed with semi-auto rifles in Kali all the time too, and by people who have them illegally. All they do is impede the law-abiding from owning anything. The thugs don't care how many laws you have against what they carry or do.
