Police are usually trying to get guns off the streets. But right now in Gainesville, something totally opposite is going on.

At Shuler's Great Outdoors in Gainesville, rifles and bows aren't the only big draws right now.

So are raffle tickets. $10 buys you the chance to win a handguns.

“It’s a Glock 27 sub-compact .40 caliber, and they standardly run $519,” said Kale Davidson of Shuler’s Great Outdoors.

The surprising part is who is organizing it. Employees of the Gainesville Police Department.

They are raising money for two fellow officers battling cancer. While those officers want to remain anonymous, word of their condition has spread quickly through the city.

“They’re families in need,” said ticket buyer Jason Bowen. “Families that need more than what they’re getting paid, and stuff like that, so it's another way to help out."

It was meant primarily to be an incentive to law enforcement to make donations, but judging by the already brisk sales at Shuler’s, everybody wants in on the action.

“We started selling at 11 this morning, and I've already talked to the deputy. He's going to bring more tickets over. It's really picked up good,” said Davidson.

A grassroots fundraiser that’s fired up a whole community.

The raffle drawing will be November 17. They're giving away four guns in all. Winners do have to go through the standard background check before they can take home their prize.

For more information, call Shuler’s at 770-536-3337.

I just talked with the shop and asked them to set up a paypal account to sell tickets. They are going to check on it and let me know.

Right now the only way to buy tickets is with a check.

Call them back and warn them NOT to, please!

PayPal is anti. Paypal will likely lock their account and lock any funds in it once they find out what it's for. :barf:

hell, maybe them setting up somethign with paypal and getting the account frozen would be a good thing.

could you imagine the headlines? Local cops start lotto for handgun to raise money for other cops with cancer, paypal refuses to give them access to the funds!
