I think it would be helpful if we could gather up helpful websites that contain gun facts and statistics. Reason being so that we dont have to go searching everytime we need the information. There could be a list of references right here. In addition if a member here posts a site and after other members check it out they may find the information is not correct, or that the website maybe more of a distraction, or maybe doing more harm than good to the 2nd amendment.

When an anti gun conversation comes up I find the conversation is usually based on emotions and it is good to have facts and statistic to calmly interject

WISQARS, from the Centers for Disease Control.

http://www.cdc.gov/injury/wisqars/index.html

You can do searches for fatal or nonfatal injury data. This is a good site for fairly accurate firearms injury reports involving people of any age. Sometimes you can differentiate between intentional and unintentional.

One interesting comparison you can do is firearms injuries vs. motor vehicle related injuries. Which one do you think causes more injuries each year?

Moving to Activism Discussion and Planning, which I think is probably a better fit for this thread.

FWIW, the FBI Uniform Crime Reports also have a lot of good statistics. When discussing the "assault weapon" fraud, I find Table 20 (Murder, by State and Type of Weapon) particularly helpful:

http://www2.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2009/data/table_20.html

Here's a summary of the 2009 stats:

Total murders...........................13,636.....100.00%
Handguns.................................6,452......47.32%
Firearms (type unknown)..................1,928......14.14%
Other weapons (non-firearm, non-edged)...1,864......13.67%
Edged weapons............................1,825......13.38%
Hands, feet, etc...........................801.......5.87%
Shotguns...................................418.......3.07%
Rifles.....................................348.......2.55%

First cautioning that very few people are persuaded by statistics (they can be interesting for themselves)...

http://www.atf.gov/statistics/afmer/ - ATF Firearms manufacturing statistics 1998 and forward

http://www.smallarmssurvey.org/home.html - The UN's Small Arms Survey (for what it's worth)

http://www.nap.edu/openbook.php?isbn=0309091241 - Firearms and Violence, the 2004 study showing that gun control laws don't seem to have any useful effect

http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/ - the Bureau of Justice Statistics (who conduct the National Crime Victimization Survey, http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/index.cfm?ty=dcdetail&iid=245)

http://www.ncjrs.gov/ - the National Criminal Justice Reference Service (lots of things are published by NCJRS)

http://www.albany.edu/sourcebook/ - the Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics

And the FBI Uniform Crime Reports, and the CDC WISQARS injury data already mentioned.
