This past Saturday I was rooting around a vendors table at a local gunshow and saw this is covered up in the back of one of his glass display cases and figured I’d have a look:

The way it was positioned in his glass case the gun was mostly covered with large price tags and holsters, all I could see was the left side of the barrel marked 38 special and noticed the ejector rod shroud and thought “that ain’t right”.

I had the vendor show it to me and I went over it with a flashlight and magnifying glass and it all looked “right” but wanting to be sure about what it was I hauled out the smartphone and googled it up.

Sure enough there is a such thing as a S&W Model 68 and from what my Google fu was able to discern the California Highway Patrol and LAPD ordered these up (the bulk going to the CHP).

Here’s a link to an article that covers the history behind the S&W Model 68:

Looks like around 6055 were produced and this one is one of the few that were sold by the LAPD Atheletic Club that has not had its single action capability disabled.

The vendor had the gun marked at $400.00 and try as I might I couldn’t get him to move on the price so I peeled out twenty 20 dollar bills and remitted his asking price.

The gun has some handling marks and appears to have been carried some and shot a little but for its condition I feel I didn’t get beat up too bad on the price.

In my world, its not every day you run across what is (for all intents and purposes) a S&W Model 66 with a 6” barrel for $400.00 out the door.

Granted, it’s chambered for 38 special (a 357 Magnum round will not chamber) but it’ll do for a shooter for sure (I can’t remember the last time I handloaded true 357 magnum loads).

It’s true what they say, even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while.

I've wanted one forever, never even seen one in the flesh. I'm a big fan of 6" barrels and the .38 Spl. Good for you. Unbelievable price.

Just goes to show, never say never when it comes to uniquely configured S&W's.

I consider myself pretty well versed and had never heard of that configuration.

Cool find. The special editions and limited production run models are fun to own.

I have a couple 38 Special K frame revolvers and shoot them about as much as anything else I own.

You out to be ashamed at even trying to lower the price. LOL. If I'm reading right in the SW Catalog 4th edition, most of the Model 68's were made for California Highway Patrol but as we can see here, some 66-2 were made for the LAPD. It gives pricing as NIB $1050, Excellent $800 and VG $600 so its safe to say you are in very nicely. I think any Stainless S&W is worth $400 and to get one like you did is a major bonus. I'm sure to the right collector you could make a nice profit should you decide to sell. The neat thing about stainless is you would have to work real hard to hurt the finish so you could shoot it for a long time and it would still never devalue the gun. Congrats on a great find

A ss S&W K frame .38 special with 6" barrel and partial lug --- Seems like a good recipe for a GREAT shooter.
What a find!

Might be the best thing to come out of LA in, uhh........ever?

Sweeeet!

You’re lucky the guy didn’t see the sparkle in your eyes when you realized what you were holding and bump it up to 5 bills!

Hopefully she shoots as well as she looks...

Stay safe!

I bought a 5” 629 Classic at the LAPD Revolver and Athletic Club back in the 1990s... and I thought that was the best thing to come out of LA...:)

Stay safe!

A buddy of mine at church who is in his 80's has a pristine Colt Police Positive .38 Spl with the Lexington KY Police Dept. stamped on it. He bought it back in the 1980's when he worked on a coke delivery truck and found it at a gun shop on his route that he serviced. I have told him if and when you want to sell it I want first dibs and he said sure.

Nice score on the S&W!

Nice find, I carried one with CHP for my first 9 years till they switched to the 4006 in 40 sw. I also bought a commorative done by Bill Davis in Sacramento. It was the standard issue for 6" revolvers. If you wanted a 4" you got a model 67. CHP only issued 38 sp ammo, so they spec'd the guns for 38. Basically a 6" model 66 I n 38 special.
