Hi folks

I bought a 10/22 about a month ago and got Tech-Sights for it to improve my irons. I'm having difficulty getting the front bead off the dovetail. I've hammered it to the point where I'm concerned about bending the barrel. I've used gun oil plus acetone (b/c i read locktite may be used sometimes); I even called Ruger and they said "if it doesn't come right out take it to a gunsmith".

So my question is twofold

1) does anybody have any other magic to get the front bead off a new (2011) 10/22?
2) does anybody have a gunsmith recommendation in North NJ, in/around Union County?

Thanks
Keith

In order to drive any sight off, the barrel MUST be supported so it can't move when you hit the sight.

Holding it in your lap at the kitchen table often won't work good.

I would lay it on a steel block or heavy 4"x4" wood block on end, with a thin sheet of cardboard or leather to protect the bluing.

Then use a brass punch and small hammer to drive it out left to right.

If you've followed RC's excellent instructions with no luck, you need to take it to a gunsmith. It should drift out with a few solid whacks from a punch, provided the barrel is well supported, and you're hammering in the proper direction.

If you do not have a heavy vise, you probably will take it to a gunsmith. RC is correct. The muzzle should be totally imobilized and the heavy vise will not move with the hit.
I have removed them with a big vise and a big hammer. One good SOLID hit each time did the trick. Front and rear.

Are you driving left to right?
