gut hooks?

IMHO hooks and too-big blades get in the way. Nice small blade works well, using 2 spread fingers as guides.

A sharp gut hook works real well but it leaves lots cut hair all over the place that is hard to get off the meat. I personally don't own or use one and I have several friends who used to use them but after seeing how much less of a mess a sharp knife cutting from the inside out (that way you don't cut hair) most of them use the regular knife and 2 finger method now instead of a gut hook. rugerman

I use both a regular knife and a gut hook. The gut hook is a pain to sharpen.

I seem to get hair on the meat no matter what I do. In my experience it's easier to get hair off of the meat than it is to take the amount of care necessary to prevent hair from getting there from the start.

I don't care if there is hair on the meat, and make no effort to avoid it.

A water hose works wonders for hair on the meat. Some people like the gut hook, others do not. Its no big deal.

I have a $9 Gerber gut-hook skinner from Wally-world. It uses throw-away replaceable razors. Before each hunt, I just pop a new one in. Couldn't be easier.

Good hunting,
Rich

Look -- gut hooks are an innovation, and a good one at that.

Otherwise, it would make sense to say,

"Guns are good for those who can't land an arrow, and for those that just won't learn bow skills."

Sheesh, come on and let each have his own without condescending insults.

No insult intended at all. There are many folks that hunt casually, and that are not skilled with a knife. Gut hooks may be right for them. Innovation is not a bad thing. My point was that gut hooks were not, and are not needed by an experienced hunter.
