I am just starting to load for my 45-70 and i was WONDERING, I have a few books and they all have the marlin 1895 and the ruger #1, now i know my H&R is not near as strong as the ruger BUT how much can I push the marlin 1895 load data? Now I have reloaded some useing the marlin data and a Barnes X bullet in 300 gr useing 54 gr. of H-322 with good results, I'm shooting Deer, 100-120 lbs Deer with open sights, And i am wondering, I like useing the peep sights but I am having trouble, real trouble @ about 80 yrds seeing what in the hell i'm shooting at, now I'm young and I have good eye sight so can anyone give me pointers to peep sights? and NO i dont want to use a scope! and is 100 yrds pushing peep sights?:banghead:

You might try the Graybeard Outdoors forum in the NEF/H&R section to see what people advise for this rifle. It's pretty popular, and you'll probably find quite a bit of load info there. I would stick to the book for standard loads, though.

For the peep sight, try some different sized apertures. Usually larger for game, smaller for targets.

I recall reading the H&R could take the hotter loads, but that's a recommendation of experienced users rather than manufacturers.

For what you're shooting, you don't need the hot loads and they certainly won't help your accuracy, but that's not really the point of shoulder busters is it?

Buffalo Bore rates the Handi-Rifle as being able to handle all of the loads they offer, so I personally would assume that they are good to go for level II .45-70. Their loads get up to 3,600 ft.-lbs., so I'd assume you'd be able to get at least 3,000 out of yours without having to worry.

it all comes down to your ability to use the sites.. if you can see well, and are capable of making the shot, 100 yards is well within range. if you are like me and would prefer to see the hairs on the targets back swaying in the breeze just before you pull the trigger, opt for a scope... either way, choose one or the other... avoid the terrible open rings....

right now I have the Clear/Green insert which is only b\c I just moved and i cant find the rest of the other inserts. and if i'm going to reload then i'm going all out, i want to hurt almost as bad as the deer i'm shooting when i pull the trigger and I was wanting to stay away from a scope:D:what:

I have one, and yes it can take the lever action level II loads. BUT you will soon tire of the heavy recoil of the heavier bullets at top lever loads. That curved steel butt plate may be period correct, but it bites into the shoulder at all but the mildest 300 grain loads.

I shoot mine while wearing a past magnum pad. No reason to prove how tough I am, just want to test loads.

NEF rates the BC as being able to handle loads rated for the 1895 Marlin; I personally verified this with them. Your shoulder will give out before the gun does.

I recommend filling the stock bolt hole with lead shot and installing a slip-on recoil pad if you plan to pursue heavy loads. AMHIK.
