I just picked up a H&R Topper 158 with a AH serial # prefix from a local shop. It came with two barrels: one in .30-30Win and one in 20ga. The rifle barrel has a serial # that matches the frame. The 20ga barrel is marked Topper Jr. Model 490. I noticed that when the shotgun barrel is mounted, the outer barrel (chamber end) diameter is larger than the receiver frame containing the firing pin/hammer. This has me concerned that this may not be a real package gun. The shotgun barrel does fit on the receiver and locks up solid, with no light visible between the barrel and receiver. From my research so far, it seems that H&R shotgun barrels can be used on rifle frames, but not vice-versa.

The rifle barrel came with a Weaver rail mount with 3 screws into the barrel over the chamber. I was wondering if this came factory drilled & tapped; some posts on other forums suggested that all H&R Topper rifle barrels were factory drilled & tapped.

My questions are:

1.) Will this shotgun barrel actually work on this frame?

2.) Were Topper rifle barrels factory drilled & tapped?
