I am loading 30 carbine. H110 is pretty messy in my pro auto disk, it tends to leak. It is dispensing very precise amounts into the cases, so no problem there, its just that the grains of powder are so small they leak around the disk and make a mess on the table after loading a few hundred rounds.

Is Win 296 better in this regard?

As a matter of fact, they are the same exact powders. They used to be similar but now that Hodgdon bought out Winchester Powders they are identical. I have a Lee Pro Auto-Disk and don't have a leaking problem. Check that you have everything seated correctly or something might be worn to the point it leaks.

Check the bottom of the powder hopper with a straight edge. If it's warped just draw file it flat using a fine bastard (mill) file. If it still leaks you may have to file the two supporting legs of the unit itself. But be very careful not to file off too much and make sure it is straight and equal on both sides. If you try this I hope you are somewhat mechanically inclined. There must be some tolerance between the hopper and the disks or the unit will jam.

I agree. My 44 Magnum data shows no significant difference between the velocities given the same powder charge.

And my Dillion 550B does not like metering H110. Gums up the blasted powder bar.

I hadn't noticed till you mentioned it, but the load data i just checked is exactly the same. But, H110 feeds thru my auto disc without a problem. Agree that something else may be amiss with your setuo.

Just confirmed with Hodgdon: W296 & H110 have always been the same powder:

H110 and Winchester 296 have always been the exact same powder just in different cans.

w296 vs h110

Philbo:

I have been using Winchester 296 powder ie 22.8 grains 44 magnum revolver with either a jacketed or lead 240 gr bullet for at least 14 years.

Do you know how long H110 has been arround?

Can't help you there 44, but it wasn't until I started reading this thread the thought ever occurred to me so I called Hodgdon and they confirmed via email the quote above. Even after confirming every load data book I could find and seeing identical data, I was still skeptical enough to contact the maker direct and ask the question. If you need more info call and talk to their customer service, good people in my experience and seem to want to assist the shooter. Refreshing actually. :)

In response to the original question, doesn't look like changing from H110 to W296 is going to make any difference except for the label.

This is all very interesting. I’ve been using H110 for about thirty years, mostly to load the US GI .30carbine with some used in full power .357 and .44mag. WW powders were supposedly dirty so I used the Hodgdon product with no problems concerning powder fouling of the gas system. My Speer books, #9, #11, and #12 all show a noticeable difference in load values between the W296 and H110. I bought some W296 a couple years ago and had no problems until I ran up a batch in my RCBS Piggyback II. There is an extra lift plug in the powder system and it seems to leak powder in operation. I will be curious to try H110 in the same system.

meinbruder,
H110 and W296 were slightly different up until Hodgdon bought Winchester Powders, now they are identical. That holds true for HP-38 and W231 too. I also wrote Winchester and was told by the Rep. that the powders are identical and I could substitute H110/W296 and HP-38/W231 data grain for grain. If I didn't hear it from the company themselves I would NEVER have posted it.
