Hi guys, I have had a lot of success recently using H4198 16gns in my .30-30, behind a 165 gn cast bullet. I am thinking about doing the same for my .308 WIN. The Lyman manual lists the same bullet with 24 gn of IMR4198!

Here in lies the problem, here I can only get H4198 and not IMR4198! Hodgdon listed a load for 160 gn cast bullets using H4198, they do not however list such a load for cast in the .308 Win. On the basis of extrapolation (case capacity, and a ratio between recommended H4198 (starting 15gns) vs IMR4198 (starting 18gns) for the 30-30) 16 gns in the 30-30 would be around 20 in the .308, but I don't want to just guess at it. Has anyone used H4198 in the .308 WIN?

I know IMR4198 and H4198 are not identical are they similar enough at reduced loads?

I believe that either 4198 powder is bit too fast for 308 Win with that weight bullet. Hodgdon has an excellent online reloading manual and I'd suggest you check out that site for the reccommended powders for your 308. H or IMR4198 would work fine for reduced loads, but not for normal loads. see www.hodgdon.com for additional information.

Lyman lists a 170 cast bullet with IMR-4198.
24.0 Starting load = 1,897 FPS.
30.5 MAX = 2,341 FPS.

If you load cast bullets, you reallly need to get a Lyman #49 manual.

Well if anything, H-4198 is just a tick slower then IMR-4198.

Look at Hodgdon data for .222 & .223 where they show both in the data for the same bullets for a comparison.

I believe you would be fine substituting it for IMR with reduced lead bullet load data.

RCModel is right. With the cast bullet data, the max load is a LONG way from max pressure in the .308. It's just where you are over driving the cast bullet past it's accuracy level....

In my experience, the difference between H and IMR4198 is about the same as the lot-to-lot variation in either.

Incidentally, Hodgdon (who distributes world wide for IMR now) has discontinued one (I don't remember which) so there's only one 4198 now..... I believe they kept the "H" which incidentally is manufactured by ADI "down under" in your neighborhood......

That explains why it's the only one you can get now......
