Hackett in rifle controversy
Sunday, January 21, 2007
Associated Press

Cincinnati - A prosecutor said Friday that there will be no charges against a former congressional candidate who police said chased three men and carried an assault rifle.

Police reports said Paul Hackett pursued three men whose car crashed into a fence outside his home and, while armed with an assault rifle, watched them until police arrived. Police in Indian Hill, an upscale suburb of Cincinnati, said they investigated Hackett's actions in the November incident and considered the matter closed.

Hackett, an Iraq war veteran, lost his bid for Congress as a Democrat in 2005.

Reports surfaced this month that the assault-rifle incident was before a grand jury.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joseph Deters issued a statement Friday saying that normally, there is no need to report the results of such an investigation.

"This matter has, however, become public," Deters said. "It is my conclusion that no criminal charges will be sought against Paul Hackett for the incident."

Deters said he'd have no other comment.

Hackett, a Marine reservist who served seven months in Iraq, drew national attention with sharp criticism of President Bush and the war during his campaign in a Republican-dominated U.S. House district in southern Ohio

I think he is that young guy whom the DNC pulled the plug on, money-wise, which I remember had a lot to do with his pro-gun stance. There is a really hilarious Daily Show interview of this guy.
