I have a pre 64 Model 70 featherweight stock as a project stock that has a hairline crack about an inch and a half long that runs from the barrel channel to the outside at the tip of the stock in front of the front sling swivel. I have read some comments that Hot Stuff Instant Glue made by Satellite City will wick itself into the crack. This crack is very tight. How do I prepare the surface before I apply the glue? Do I clean with acetone, laquer thinner or what? Any suggestion will help. BW

If it is a recent crack, and clean of oil & dirt?
Do it now!
Just don't glue your hand to the stock!!
BTDT to model airplane fuselage more then once!!

BE EXTRA CAREFUL it doesn't wick through the crack and run down the stock on the finish!

If it is an old crack with oil and dirt, I would use an air hose and some solvent such as denatured alcohol, or mineral spirits, that won't attack the stock finish to clean it out as well as possible.

Then blow dry with the air hose and allow to dry further overnight.

BTW: Satellite City Hot Stuff is just one brand of thin cyA adhesive.
You may find Lock-Tight brand at a hardware, or original thin Super-Glue at Walmart.

It's all pretty much the same thing.

rc, it's an old crack. The stock shows some evidence of excess gun oil running into the barrel channel so I would guess the crack has oil inside. I'll follow your suggestions and clean with mineral spirits and then blow dry with a air hose. After it dries overnight I will apply the glue. I have some Duro super glue that is probably the same stuff. Thanks for the reply. BW

I have some Duro super glue
Just make sure it is fresh & Thin!!

It tends to thicken in storage once opened, to about like pancake syrup or motor oil.

Once it does, it will not wick clear to the bottom of a crack anymore.

It has to be fresh and runny like water to work right for crack repair.

Yeah for what a tube costs I would spring for a new tube for this job if it were mine. This works great with new cracks but I have not had such great results with old oil filled ones. YMMV Good luck:cool:

OK, I followed your advice. I washed the crack in mineral spirits, blew it out with an air hose, used a new tube of thin super glue to allow the glue to penetrate the crack. After it dried overnight I hit the glue lightly with a piece of 400 grid sandpaper to remove the glue from the surface. Over the next 3 days I gave the spot one coat of special walnut stain to match the stock, and then 2 coats of French's Winchester 70 stain and sealer. After each coat of sealer was dry I hit it lightly with 0000 steel wool to remove the excess from the surface and to give it a matt finish. The job came out really good. I've seen cracks like this before that never got any bigger but wanted to fix this one because of the high quality of the stock. Thanks rc and frog for your help. BW
