Hampton, Virginia's "1-Finger Salute" to state law (video)

I think the bums should either be impeached or recalled for their willful and knowing violation of state law (Premption)

No, that was the Police Chief!

No, the fat guy who began his comment by expressing what a strong supporter of the Second Amendment he is and also that the Second Amendment is completely irrelevant was the council member who indicated he plans to run for a seat in the House of Delegates and repeal preemption (Councilman Gilliland).

This is a good thing. The rule to remember is that no government agency likes to have it's authority questioned. One of the best ways to get things done at a city or county level is to get the state convinced that the local governments are defying their authority. A letter of objection? That will have them ROTFL in Richmond.
Just another form of triangulation. :)

Now the NRA has gotten involved, as well. I just received this from NRA-ILA:

In a move that defies Virginia law and reeks of elitism and contempt, the Hampton, Va. City Council has publicly voiced their intention to ignore Virginia's firearms preemption law by refusing to remove invalid local firearms prohibitions from city code. During a March 23, 2005 City Council meeting, several Council Members questioned to what extent they would be accountable for ignoring state firearm law. When the City Attorney offered that criminal charges were not likely, but that civil penalties could certainly be a possibility, nobody on the Council seemed too concerned! Apparently, the City Council is more than willing to defy state law as long as it is the taxpayers who will pay the price.

NRA Members in the Hampton area are strongly encouraged to contact your City Council Members and demand that the City of Hampton abide by the state firearms laws enacted by the General Assembly, specifically the state firearms preemption law.

For those Virginia Members not living in the Hampton area, please contact your State Delegate and State Senator and urge them to take decisive action against the rogue Hampton City Council for their disregard of statewide preemption law. (You can find contact information for your legislators by using the "Write Your Representatives" tool at www.NRAILA.org ).

I find myself in an ironic position here.

First, I support the rights of most everyone to keep and bear arms.

Second, I wish more state and local authorities would stand up to the powers over them and have some local rule.

How many cheered when Montanna stood up to the federal goverrnment and said that guns made and sold within the state did not come under the federal rule. How many of us would love to see love to see our state refuse to acknowledge all of the gun laws that came from Washington based on "Interstate Commerce"?

So in this case I find myself praising them for their attatude and willingness to take action, and cursing them for the direction in which they are doing it.

RD,
I too support state's rights and less Federal money and control in the states. If an issue affects only the locality, they should have all the power to control that issue. My problem is I live next to Hampton. I don't vote for those retards. I am affected if I drive through there going to work. VA's pre-emption law removed the local law patchwork that a bunch of racists, leftists, elitists, and alarmists had created.(A lot of -ists, sometimes all the same person.) We like the Constitution because it supposedly creates a level playing field across the land, in that vein the state is well with in its power to pass a law that says in effect "you will obey our state and nation's Constitutions". It is a lot easier to elect tyrant locally than it is nationally.
