Hand Primer Smashing Primers

I have never loaded .40S&W, but I have loaded the necked down version, .357 sig. That's a SPP

I would ask OP to check that he is using the correct shell holder and not just one that fit.

Yes RCBS #27 for 40s&w

Sometimes I run into brass that has a semi-crimped primer pocket,,, The ring style crimp... That brass is a little harder to seat the primer within and it makes a flat goofy looking primer just like the times I used to wrong plunger...

The little hand reamers work great to get rid of the little crimping ring...

Also I own a few shell holders which are just a little weird.... I have 4 RCBS number 3's... There is one that is much tighter than the others. The same goes for one of my #2's...

They asked if you checked the ring in the shell holder for debris. You stated you did, but did you check the socket that the shell holder sits in for debris in the actual tool itself? That might cause the problem of a punch that is off center also. Just something else to check.:) Me I started off with the Lee set and have been happy with those. I am sure everybody has their favorite, and they all work well.

Actually the shell holder fits on a plastic bushing that feeds the primer pin to the center of the shell holder and is held in place by the safety bar. Even if the bushing is off a tad one way or the other the pin is still centered in the shell holder. What I have found is tho, because of how the RCBS feeds the primers, one tends to tilt it to one side in order to get them to feed. I know I do. By doing this, if you feed the cases from the other side, they tend to want to slide out. Thus I always hold them tight into the shell holder with my opposite hand as I push the primer in.

Mine look that way and I have never had a failure of any kind. Mine was caused by a slight misalignment and I really don't worry about it.

I don't have an RCBS primer, but I have to agree with others--something is causing an alignment issue between the brass and the primer punch.

If it makes you feel any better, I've mangled primers MUCH worse than that and the rounds still went bang. For plinking/informal target loads, as long as they're not sideways or upside down, I'll shoot 'em.

Yep, that's what i'm gathering. They're loaded up and ready to go now.

Not that anybody is still actually monitoring this thread but...I looked a little closer last night (yea, several days later, stupid I know) and I think I see the problem. New rod, new shell holder, media or junk in the shell holder new plastic inserts etc. isn't going to help this. Also, I did a few CCI primers and did not have nearly the "smash" as the softer Remingtons. It would seem, that RCBS makes these with kind of loose tolerances? Not knowing what the guts looks like but I'm not sure there is a way to straighten it out or adjust it or not. But, to no surprise, the primer comes out looking just like this. Thanks again everyone. I feel stupid for not looking at this right off the bat. :banghead:

They all look like that!
The whole idea behind a hand primer is you can feel the primer seat easier.
You keep muscling down on the handle of any priming tool after the primer is seated and you'll dent any primer!
