I am going coyote hunting With my Ruger Old Army...Has anyone else on this forum hunted coyotes with pistol? In my opinion, handgun hunting is a great challenge, even more so when its black powder! There are a fair amount of coyotes here in Ohio...

Yes. Most of the coyotes I have shot were with a handgun: usually my normal CCW gun. Mostly a Colt Officer's Model.
All you need to do is call in heavy cover.

My brother got a double during deer season while experimenting with a fawn bleat call. He used a Ruger Redhawk in .44 magnum and 240 grain JSPs.

Coyotes can be pretty tough for their size, if you are not fur hunting, I would drill them in their shoulders, you shouldn't have any problems breaking one or both with an Old Army .44.

Are you using round balls or conicals?

Ruger Old Army

My current load consists of Oeregon trail 200gr. rnfp .452 sized up to .454, 45gr. Pyrodex P , Ox Yoke wad, and CCI magum caps...Can keep em' all 3" at 40 or 50 yds:evil:

I took this one in '82 with my Ruger Old Army speer round ball and 40 grains of FFF black powder, with an Ox Yoke .45 wad. I remember it so well because I never used anything else in that gun.

Good luck in your hunt.

I was carrying my Brother's USP 45 while walking into my hunting spot. I jumped two 'yotes about 12 yards from me, and my rifle was over my shoulder. I grabbed the USP and opened up. Two 'yotes dead easy. The only other time I used a Pistol was when I broke the spine of a 'yote and didn't want to use my $1.25 30-06 loads to finish him off (using the gun for practice for an upcoming hunt), so I finished him with 230 grain 45 bullet to the head.
