Based upon opinions here which I agree with I am investing in 3 handgun safes. We are adopting a baby next year, and I want to cover my bases. I invested in a large safe for 95% of my firearms, but I want to have a handgun safe on each floor. 1st, 2nd, and the basement. Any suggestions based upon personal experience with small children? I have done a lot of research, and there are a lot of good choices with prices all over the place. I am beyond caring about price, and just want to choose the best product. Thank you for your time.

I've got a Mossberg (I've been using it for about 7 years and like it) but I recently looked at the S&W's and was pretty impressed with them as well. The S&W's are not dual use by any means but they are practical handgun safes. The Mossy has a backup battery, and you can order seperate mounting plates that allow you to move one safe between vehicles, boats and such. It also has a tamper alarm and shuts down if more than (3 or 4 ??) attempts are made to open it. The Mossy is large enough to hold a full size pistol, an extra mag and a surefire.

Hi,

Try Handgunsafe.com, I don't have personal experience, but they have a good reputation. They are very heavily built of 3/16 and 1/4" steel with Simplex locks and come in a variety of sizes.

One other detriment to the electronic safes - some of the ones I have played with in the store emit a beep for each button being pressed and some have a wrong code alarm.

If you can't turn off the beep/alarm, I'd stay away from it; last thing I want is to be making noise and giving away my position if I have an intruder in the house.

The one I have has an option to mute the tones.....no sounds just a small led that light green with correct combination, red for incorrect. Easily hidden by your hand while punching in.

What I had to consider (and practice) was the force with which the spring-loaded door would open. It will make quite the impact if you don't catch it on the way down.

With practice I've gotten quick with the (programable) combo, can catch the door so it is silent, and have my hand on the gun/ready to fire in an accceptable period of time. Acceptable as in not on my person but faster than a normal safe.

I feel secure enough to leave the weapon loaded in there while at home, but do not think it would keep a gremlin with a crowbar out for very long if he had uninterrupted time to work on it.

Which is why it is out of sight!! :D

Yeah definite point - none of these boxes would keep anyone with a crowbar or even a long screwdriver out for long. Probably shouldn't call them safes; lock box is more appropriate.
