Hi Guys; Brand new to high road. Need some help. Have a CVA Mountain Stalker 54 cal 1:38 twist. want to hunt with it this fall. Tried maxi balls in it and they were all over the place. Just got some Hornady 54 cal sabots With 44 cal/265 JFP to try. The rifle shot round ball pretty good but am wondering if Mini ball would shoot good in this rifle, before I put out the bucks to get a good mold. Intend on using Gorex FF and CCI primers. Believe this rifle was set up to shoot sabots but would rather not shoot to much plastic. Any help from you fellows whom have tried everything in one of these would be very helpful. Thanks

That's definitely a sabot barrel and your best results will be with sabots. I use the 44 in my 50 sabot barrel, seems you could go to 45 or even to 50 or 52. I tried the Lee 50 REAL bullets in mine and they were better than round ball, but nowhere as good as sabots. I saved money by buying the sabots alone and using cast bullets for filler.

I was looking at a nice use .50 Mountain Stalker in the gun shop just the other day and I thought that it was a really nice looking rifle. I had no idea what the twist rate was because that wasn't listed anywhere on it. And the serial was just a bunch of numbers without any reference to its production date.
It's ramrod was sticking out past the muzzle about 3 inches.
Does your ramrod stick out beyond the muzzle by that much too?
I think that there's some conical bullets that will shoot pretty good out of it.
A Minie may or may not be one of them, but you won't know until you try it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of muzzleloading. You will find that there is a vast and confusing world of variables available to you in your quest to find what your rifle needs to be accurate. My best advice to you is to consider everything that is available to you and to keep notes.
