I had a KelTec P11 stolen from my car a year ago from the parking lot of a restaurant. I received a call today that it was recovered in Homewood, AL. I've got a call in to see if I can get it back.

Has anyone had a stolen gun returned? What are the chances of me getting this back? I know it may take a while if it is evidence in a case.

no, but my boss has. i think it was a ruger redhawk in 44 mag, stolen from his home when he lived down in alabama. the police down there sent it to him after he moved up to alaska.

then two years ago, someone broke into his home and stole the same gun. not likely that it will ever be recovered.

Yes I got one back,

Yes I had my home robbed and the thieves stole a Colt Woodsman from my bench, I was working on it that weekend and had not yet put it into my safe.
The detective who was tracking the robberies in the area took my list of missing items but told me not to get my hopes for their return.
Twelve weeks go by and I get on with my life writing off my favorite target pistol and other stolen items, all the while the detective was setting up a sting of a big fish fence in the area.
Long story short they busted the fence and found much of my property including my Woodsman in the end I got back about 92% of my things.

The police recovered my stolen Smith 66 (from my truck, among other things) about 2 years after the theft. I got a letter in the mail to come pick it up. Apparently it was recovered under the seat of a stolen then abandoned car.

It was still in the holster, still in good shape, as clean as when I lost it. I asked if it had been loaded when they found it, the desk guy looked at the report and said it had, so I asked for my rounds back too.

He told me to have a nice day, so I left roundless. :(

In 1992, a coworker had his entire collection stolen in a home invasion robbery (he was set up by another coworker of ours). About 40 firearms in all. A dozen Colt SAA's, an AR, an AK, shotguns, 1911's, and his S&W collection.

Over the next 5 years, he got back about 10 before he and I lost track of each other.

This was in San Diego. The majority of returned pistols were recovered in NYC. One 1911 had the serial #'s ground off, but the BATF issued him a replacement #. Some of the NYC recovered pistols had case #'s engraved in the frames. :(

The SDPD were never very helpful in coordinating returns.

None of the long guns or the SAA's were ever recovered to the best of my knowledge.

An uncle of mine had somewhere between 15-20 guns stolen 18 years ago. Just this past year he had a call from the sheriffs office where he use to live telling him they had recovered a Ruger 44mag blackhawk of his. Some guy was trying to register it as a CCW. He was not the guy that stole the weapon but we both had a laugh trying to figure out who would want to pack a weapon of that size and why.

Maybe 10 years ago my High Power was stolen in a home burglary. About 6 months later I got a call that the cops in a town about 35 miles away had taken it off a guy they arrested, along with about 60 rocks of crack. I had to wait a few more months for the prosecution to wrap up, as they wanted it for evidence, but once that was done I had no problem getting it back.

I did have to answer a few questions about whether my insurance had already paid for the gun, because the insurance company would probably claim to own it if they had. They hadn't, so there was no problem there.

A shooting buddy had one of his Glocks stolen in the mid 90's, and it turned up 3 years later in a ditch in a nearby city. He never mentioned any hassles in getting the gun back. The thing still shoots great.

In 1994 I was living in Reno and had a Glock 19, Ruger SP-101, and Maverick 88 shotgun stolen by one of my brothers worthless friends. This guy later went on to shoot and kill someone a few weeks later. My heart just sank as I feared that one of my guns was used to commit murder. Turns out he shot the guy with some "Saturday Night Special" type of small caliber pistol. Needless to say he went to prison and I just wrote off my guns as lost forever. Well, about three years ago, The Reno PD contacts my father (I moved from Reno in 1995) and says they've recovered one of my guns, the Ruger. I signed an affidavit and they released the gun to my father who still has it.

sigh*

i wish i could say the same for my ar and competition .22.

oh well.

hopefully they shoot their own toes off or something.

i actually thought about (once upon a time) of dead-pinning the firing pin retaining pin on the ar, but decided not to because i might forget and blow my own face off.

btw: for you guys who had multiple guns stolen, were they in safes? because i really wonder how many people get their safes hacked into and robbed...

i just got a new safe.

I had about 30 or so stolen over the years due to break-ins at my gun shop and to this date only got one back.A local guy threatened his wife with it cops ran the numbers and called me to come down and get it back.

Had 4 stolen in 12/98. Beretta 92 Stainless, Ruger P91, Ruger P95, and Beretta 84. In 7/01 I got a call that they were recovered from someones house whose mother found them and turned her son in. He admitted to stealing them when he was 13 and they were in perfect shape. He hadn't even fired them. I got all 4 back and my dad has them now. The cool thing is, I was living in one of my grandmothers homes which she had insurance on and I got a check for about $1700 or so dollars in 1/99. SSSHHH!!!

My neighbors punk-a$$ 15y.o.son stole my CZ-75BD 9mm out of my car. He broke the lock on the drivers side door and the lock on the glove compartment. He was "renting" the gun to his punk-a$$ pals to do armed robberies with for a piece of the take. Thank God nobody was hurt before the police arrested them. I got it back after much red tape.

P.S. The thief did a few weeks in juvenile detention. Since he was a "good boy" his dad bought him a new Mustang convertible for his 16th birthday. If I had done something like that, my dad would have jammed that gun up my backside and dared me to shXX.

Gunsnrovers, you are a liar. They could not have found those stolen guns in NYC since they have gun control laws there. It is impossible that criminals would have taken the guns there. :neener:

OK, my sister gave here old boyfreind a 870 for his birthday. A few weeks later his car was broken into, and the gun was stolen. The police later busted somebody and found the shotgun. They called him in to pick it up, but when he got there he found that the thief had sawed the barrel back and cut the stock off to make it a crude pistol grip. He was sick and let the police keep it.

Yes. I had several returned, but I knew exactly who took them and where he was.

My apartment was broken into and I had 6 handguns stolen, They included a LW Commander and a repo Walker. I filed a police report which included serial#s. 3 weeks later I got a call from HPD that they had recovered my Commander, It seems that an Officer was working security at the Gun Show and had bought the Colt for 200$. He checked the serial # and found out that it was hot, so he found the guy he bought it from and asked for his money back as he had found another gun he wanted more than the Colt. He then arrested that person for possesion of stolen goods!! This was on a Saturday and I was called that afternoon. On Sunday I went to the show and in less than 2 hours I found the rest of my possesions on a "dealers" table. His loss was my gain!!! I recieved my weapons back 2 weeks later after all the reports and paperwork were filed. The "dealer" went to jail as the Feds found that he was keeping 2 sets of books! :neener:
