looking at buying a garand from the CMP, but it doesn't seem as though they update their website often.
do they have any garands right now??

i'm looking for just a plain old shooter...nothing too fancy. what experience has anyone had with their different "grades"?? rack, field, service, etc...

the thought of buying something sight unseen kind of makes me nervous.
has anyone been horribly dissappointed?

any help would be great!

Bought a Service Grade last year and was very impressed with the overall quality. I think service grade is the way to go. If your gonna throw down money you might as well go with quality.

I personally have no experience with them, but a friend (who still shoots on the Navy Rifle Team, though retired) has seen racks full of them in Anniston, AL.

He just described them as being in really good condition and quite a sight to behold.

Quite the opposite; the field grade M1 rifles that I bought from them were better than described. They're not new rifles; the CMP has taken steps to make sure that you're not going out on a limb with them. Most people aren't disappointed.

They've recommended service grade rifles for what you've described. My experience with field grade has been good, too. If you want to be sure of a post-WWII rifle (possibly newer, with less wear), you might order a Harrington & Richardson M1 (shown as "HRA" in their listings).

Their forums have a lot of information that might interest you, too, as well as some reports from other customers. Here's a link.

Finally, here's a THR thread from six years ago that you might like. CGofMP, eclancy and some other heavyweights contributed to it. Note that Charles's site, Memorable Places, has been incorporated into the CMP's technical and historical information pages and no longer exists as a separate site.

Be sure to buy ammo. The Greek HXP stuff is excellent. ;)

I bought a Mossberg M44US from them several months ago and was =very= pleased with it.

I ordered a Service grade M1 in Jan .... but they are currently several months behind on orders. The have shut the retail stores thru the end of the month to try and get back to current with their order backlog.

They still list M1's available ... so if you want one, get the order in. Remember to supply ALL of the paperwork they ask for, or you will delay your order, or perhaps not have it processed at all (if you don't qualify).

ps ... just visited the site ... looks like they are processing Dec 2008 orders now ...
 
I went to the North store right before the closed. I picked up a real nice Field Grade. The stock was trash but the metal was great and the bore had very little wear. I tossed it in a new CMP stock and it looks amazing and has shown great potential at the range as well. I wouldn't buy from the group of field grades they had on display if I were to close my eyes and pick. There were too many that were beat up and had very worn barrels that it just isn't worth it. Maybe the ones they were shipping were in better shape but its too big of a risk from what I saw. The Service Grades were ok and had much better wood. None of them gauged as well as the field grade I picked up though so its always going to be a bit of a luck of the draw.
 
I think they have them, but it takes quite a long time to get the rifle. I got an email saying they received my order on December 1, 2008, and have still not received it. I imagine that they received a lot of orders around that time. Oh well, it gives me something to look forward to each day I get home.

I was actually thinking about buying several and putting together a display.

Springfield Garand

I ordered a Service Grade Springfield Garand from CMP back in Sept. It came in after only three weeks. (Note: The M1917 "Enfield" I ordered in November took about 40 days to come in.)

It had a new Boyd's Beech stock and if it had been fired, it wasn't much in my opinion. The Bore and muzzle were in great shape.

I wanted a shooter and I got one.

Also: I had been looking for an Eddystone M1917 at the gun shows for a while and every one I found was beat up and ragged and WAY OVER PRICED. I saw CMP had some Rack Grades for $400, and took a chance. I got a Winchester M1917 and it was in far better than RACK grade condition IMO. It is a shooter also.

I want a H&R M1, and my experience with the M1917 is making me wonder if a rack grade might not be the way to go.

They update the site almost continually.

OP, don't be afraid. I've purchased a total of sixteen rifles from CMP and not one was not what I expected. Just read their descriptive text about their grading system and remember that appearance is not their first criteria.

A military rifle doesn't need to look good - it needs to work good.

(Hey, did I just write a sigline?)
 
In the last year, I ordered both an Service Grade HRA and a Winchester. They both are fantastic shooters, and both look great, mainly because they have new stocks on them. But the Winchester (they're sold out) has probably 95+ percent of its finish.

Don't let the descriptions fool you. CMP describes the "worse" of a group so that no one is disappointed, but, usually what you end up with is MUCH better than described.
