Has anyone tried this combination?

Hornady 168gr. BTHP Moly Coated
H4895 powder
CCI-450 (Large Rifle Magnum) Primer
Lake City Brass

I'm planning on working up some loads and don't have any Large Rifle Primers, but do have the Magnum's.

Wondering what results you had with this combination.

It'll be shot out of a Savage Model 10FCP-HS LE series rifle with a 24" barrel.

I'm aware to start off 10% short of the Max load and work up checking for pressure signs, just looking for any input from anyone who may have already tried this load.

Hornady (7th Edition) has 35.1 - 43.3 grains
Modern Reloading (2nd Edition) has 41.0 - 43.5 grains
Hodgdon's site has 41.0 -43.5 grains

I imagine I'll start with those load ranges there but stay short of the max loads.

Just wondering if anyone has has any luck with the combination of the components and if they'd share the results.

I have substituted magnum primers with loadings of a wide variety of cartridges from 6mm, 243, 6.5x55, 270, 7x57, 280, 308, and 30-06. However, I was always using slower burning powders (X?4350 and X?4831) with the heavier bullets in each. Success varied.

If I were to attempt the MLR substitution with H4895, I would be very careful, start at the most minimum (now there's an oxymoron) charge, work up slowly, watch pressure signs closely, and wear safety equipment.

Moly coated bullets are one of those things I stay away from. If you do use them, rule out using non-coated bullets. From my limited experience with moly coated bullets, you can't have both, or at least my 7mm Weatherby was that way. What a PITA mess to get that moly out of the barrel after giving up on a good grouping from those bullets.

Yeah Shoney, that's kinda what I was thinking.

I know that the H4895 will burn a little faster than the 4350's and the 4320's and would start with the lowest charge the work my way up looking for blown primers, swelling or splitting.

I've shoot both Moly coated and Copper Match bullets out of my AR and have no problems with them.

The thing I notice is the accuracy seems to remain the same between the two, but cleaning after shooting the Moly rounds is MUCH easier than cleaning after the non-coated rounds.

Some Hopps pulls that Moly right out of the barrel with no problems.

I've heard of people complaining about the moly coating and tumbling it on themselves, but I've bought Moly Coated BTHP's so it's already done for me so I don't have to get all covered in it!

Don't know why you would use a magnum primer with a relatively fast burning extruded powder like H4895. Oh, and BTW, H4895 will burn quite a bit faster than any 4350 burn rate powder. Also, the above min-max loads DO NOT take into consideration that you are using Lake City brass, which has a reduced case capacity. Personally, I would start at about 38.0gr, and would have serious reservations about going much above 40.0gr, given the components you are using.

yep just thinking about it. i would loose the primers. dont need magnum primers in it. your going to have to put a heavy crimp on it if you do. Magnum primers can start the bullet moving before case presure builds up.

That's some good info......

The Lake City brass I have headstamp shows it was manufactured in '05 and has the little NATO spec stamp on it.

Bought it early this year in a bulk deal from Cableas as 500 rounds of remanufactured ammo and I'm just getting completed with my rifle, shooting what I have and building loads for it.

Had no idea that Lake City Brass has a reduced case capacity. I've been loading smaller bore loads (.22-250, .7mm mag, .270 and such) in Winchester & Remington brass for a little over a year now.

Good thing I was looking for some feedback before I loaded a couple of hundred rounds!!!

I'll hold off and get the Large Rifle Primers instead of using the Magnums.
