This is strictly academic or rhetorical, as I've never hunted anything, despite being middle-aged (and not yet seasoned with guns).
Bought a nice Lee-Enfield #5 Jungle Carbine in May and a week ago a nice #4 at the Batesville, MS gun show.

As the #4 (and earlier series) have taken all North American game, even larger beasts around the world (i.e. lions) plus huge numbers of enemies of Britain/Commonwealth in WW2, it has quite a record, but seems to be used much more in Canada, Africa etc.
Some units of the Indian Police or Army still use them, as seen in photos after the Oct '08 terrorist attack in Mumbai, India.

My only potential interest in hunting would be for a feral pig. For now, bricks, jugs, a few black, plastic peel-off targets at 50-100 yards. 100 is still a challenge with iron sights (one by the bullseye out of about six or more).
Lots of milsurp rifles are just uncool with most hunters or plinkers, it appears.

My Dad and I have used a couple of Bubba'd #4s to take a few mulies and white-tails over the years. I've never hunted with a full-stocked milsurp, though.

I haven't hunted since Dad passed away.

Then again, I haven't needed to. We only hunted when we were broke, and Dad always seemed to find a way to keep us in that condition.

So my pristine #1s and #4 may never get used for hunting.
 
Sorry, waldo, I know how you feel. As for the No4, I have a No4Mk1* that shoots like a laser, but I need a 5 round mag for hunting, haven't come across one yet...
 
A buddy of mine showed up for his first elk hunt with a sporterized Enfield .303. He's since bought newer more powerful rifles but there was nothing 'wrong' about hunting with that old warhorse.
 
Hey, armoredman, there's hope. I picked up two pre-SMLE cavalry carbines that had short magazines. They'd been used as camp guns on the King Ranch for about a century, I guess, and somewhere along the way Bubba had stuck Weaver 4Xs on them with wobbly side mounts. The guns are still pretty accurate, and the mags also fit my #1s. Both guns together cost me $140, tax included.

Ya know, I never checked to see if they'd fit and function in a #4. I'll have to check when I get home tonight.

PS: You can also Bubba-up your own 5-rounder!

I have hunted feral pigs

I have shot several pigs with my Enfield. I bought a Santa Fe Arms converted Jungle Carbine with a cracked stock off a used rack at a local gun store. Paid $180 out the door. Swapped the stock with the ATI and added a scope mount and burris timberline 2-7x32. I have shot seval pigs with the 180 grain remington core-lokt. I am handloading 215 grain Woodleighs now. It does the job. I use primarly as my backup or when someone needs another rifle.
 
I have a NO 4 MKII that has two whitetails and one black bear to it's credit so far. Also shot a whitetail with a 45 colt. Talk about getting up close and personal! Those cowboys must have been really good with their pistols!! Or starve I suppose.
