Hi All,

I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to posting things on on line forums, so please bear with me. I haven't owned a 1911 in 20yrs (last was a Colt series 70 in 45ACP) and was thinking of getting a new one. What can you tell me about the Rock Island Armory 1911 Tactical II in 10mm ? I handled a RIA 1911 Standard GI at one of our local gun shop & whoopie parlors and it seemed well made. Thoughts? Suggestions? Any advice would be of help. Thanks much!

Rock island makes good entry level 1911s, and they have good customer service you should be happy with your purchase.

10mm is a different beast than 45 acp. It's not for everyone so I'd try to shoot something in 10mm before you buy

The ones I've shot ran fine and seemed a pretty good value. All I know about their 10mm is what I've read.

I like the 10mm very much and own two: Glock 20 and S&W 1006. It can be a somewhat stout round but much of the stuff sold now days is barely more than 40 S&W. If you want to develop the true potential of the round, you have to roll your own which I do. Or buy the higher end ammunition such as Buffalo Bore or Double Tap.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks all for your input. 10mm seems to be growing in popularity with the gun crowd here in western Washington. Ammo seems readily available and I do reload (just not 10mm-yet). I borrowed a Glock in 10mm from one of our steel plate shooters at my local range. Loved the caliber, I just didn't care for the gun. Just my age I guess. A lot of the guys love their Glocks, however for me an all steel 1911 seems to be the way to go. I just don't have the money for a Kimber or a Colt (both available locally in 10mm).
To get the 10mm from RIA, I'm going to have to order it. My next question is;
What can you tell me about ordering from Cheaper then Dirt? The process seems straight forward, but I've never ordered a gun from them.
Thanks!

RIA is one of those good buys in a relatively inexpensive firearm. I've had several student with them and once broken in they performed fine. They seem to have about a 200 round break in period. They are very magazine selective. (Like other 1911's aren't.)

Yes, sir. Yes, sir. Yes, sir.

And welcome back to the 1911 world.

1. The 10mm is a reloader's cartridge. If you are not a reloader, you may very well go broke buying ammo.
1a. For your first 1911 (in a generation) most would recommend a .45acp. I would agree. but do as you will...it's your money.
2. Do some reading on Cheaper Than (Gold) Dust. They don't exactly have a sterling reputation with most shooters...and even less so in the last year or so.
3. Then do some reading on RIA. They have a serious fanboy quotient. My experience was a bit different. Some others' experience...likewise.

Work (research) now, cry less later.

I can advise against it. Do a forum search and you'll find many many members of this forum who've had bad experiences with that outfit.

I have a new, unfired RIA 10mm for sale here in the classifieds. $565 and $10 for shipping. Best price you'll find. :D

Lanbo's Armory has them listed for $533.19.
I won't give my money to Cheaper Than Dirt. Not only because their name highly inaccurate.
I too, am in Western Washington. 10mm has been readily available, even through the recent stupidity.
I shoot 10mm, in a Kimber. If RIA had a 10mm when I was looking? I probably would have bought it instead? Nothing wrong with the Kimber. Just for the money, you could get the RIA, mags, holster and mag pouch, dies, and components. Maybe with money left over?
10mm is pretty cool, if you load for it. The only down side is, CHASING BRASS! It launches into the next county. You pretty much have to mail order it. So losing any sucks.
What part of W. WA. You in?
