Suburbs with gun bans split over impact of court ruling

Local officials study the potential impact of the federal decision overturning Washington's law

Some Chicago suburbs that have passed handgun bans in the past weren't sure if those laws could be jeopardized by Thursday's U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Others didn't think it would matter either way.

In the years since Morton Grove passed the first handgun ban in the nation in 1981, Evanston, Oak Park, Winnetka and Wilmette also outlawed handguns. Because of the high court's ruling that Washington, D.C., cannot ban people from owning guns, all five suburban bans could now be declared unconstitutional.

Though Chicago officials Thursday vowed to fight any challenges to its 1982 handgun ban, suburban officials said it was too soon to say whether the ruling applied to them. Some felt that overturning their bans wouldn't be a big deal. Still others were outraged, such as Oak Park Village President David Pope, who said the ruling would threaten safety in his near west suburb, which banned gun ownership in 1984.

"The ruling puts [Justice Antonin] Scalia and the four other conservative justices squarely on the side of the gang-bangers who terrorize far too many of urban American neighborhoods today," he said.

Wilmette will suspend enforcement of the ban while attorneys decide whether the ruling applies to them, said Village President Chris Canning.

Winnetka banned handguns in 1989, a year after Laurie Dann, 20, opened fire with three handguns inside an elementary school, killing an 8-year-old boy and injuring five others. Village President Ed Woodbury said Thursday that Winnetka doesn't have much gun-related crime and called the ban "an expression of the kind of community we want to be."

Morton Grove Mayor Richard Krier said the village would comply with the law.

"We are a small suburban town," he said of the north suburb, which banned the possession or sale of handguns 27 years ago. "We've never had any real handgun violence before then or since then."

Suburban gun owners and merchants hailed the Supreme Court ruling.

Hale DeMar of Wilmette gained notoriety four years ago when he shot a burglar in his home and was cited with violating the village's gun ownership ban. The case was resolved when the state passed a law enabling courts to ignore local gun ordinances in cases where the weapon was used in self-defense.

"I understand the politics of it, but as a parent of two small children who was faced with that situation, I was glad to have the handgun in my house. I would do it again," DeMar said Thursday. The burglar "weighed more than 200 pounds. I'm a 60-year-old guy and I weigh 140 pounds. What am I going to do? Argue with the guy?"

Shouldn't the title of this thread be "Wilmette surrenders" since it is wilmette that has suspended enforcement. Morton Grove just said they "would comply with the law" but have they suspended enforcement yet?

Wonderful! The good news from this decision just keeps on coming.
It's a tsunami for the gun hater's.:D
Thank you for the post, Mr. Reynolds.
Now,square the comments of Morton Grove's Mayor with Richard Daley's.

Leftist extremists believe their expressions of good intentions trump commoners' civil rights.

No problem stay tuned.

Morton Grove surrendered (too bad, would have been sweet revenge), but Oak Park and Chicago are going to fight to the last taxpayer dollar.

Great story on NPR this morning where Oak Park residents were sending e-mails to Oak Park government immediately after Heller, "I'm off to buy a pistol, try and stop me.":)

Good to see even Illinoisians are not the driven sheep that their governments want them to be.:D

"Scalia and the other 'conservative' justices squarely sided with gang-bangers?!?!?" WTH did he come up with that? Obviously he didn't read the opinion at all, just the liberal diatribe being spewed by Brady, et al.

Nice job at totally missing the point, dude. The justices recognize our right to defend ourselves from said "gang-bangers". They surely are not "on the side of" the gang-bangers... quite to the contrary.

KimberFan, when you don't have the facts on your side, you gotta do what you gotta do. Back when the Republicans seemed to be conservative, they were likened to Nazis. I mean, who can defend Nazis? Same deal here. SCOTUS = Gangbanger. Just wait until the "racist" epithet gets thrown out there. That's a label you just can't defend against.

They are lucky not to have a lot of Aggies up there

Don't kid yourself. Since I moved here from DFW (21 yrs now) I've met some people that couldn't begin to solve the A&M Rubik's Cube (all 6 sides are maroon).

BrianB,

It is unfortunate that you have some so many Aggie-like folks up there. But remember, just because one wonders why they don’t see as well during certain hours of the day does not make them an Aggie.

They also have to bleed maroon and have a penchant for beastiality. It was that unnatural and repugnant proclivity that made me reference “sheep” in my post.

Let's not forget Kennessaw GA. Murder free for 25 years.

Those evil guns have been plotting all this time.
Soon they will attack en mass and take over Kennassaw and make it liky New your City, ot chicago, or Washington, DC...

Morton Grove Mayor Richard Krier commenting on the town's handgun ban 27 years ago:

"We've never had any real handgun violence before then or since then."

So 27 years ago a normal person would have thought that since the town never had any real handgun violence there was no need for a handgun ban. But not the administration and voters of Morton Grove.

Handgun bans were fashionable 27 years ago, so the town wanted one because the other cool kids were getting one.

Perhaps Morton Grove can console itself for the loss of its handgun ban by banning self-propelled airborne elephants. Ain't none of those either but that shouldn't matter to the window lickers of Morton Grove, IL. One ban is as good as another.

Why would these avowed pinhead rabid blissninnies surrender when they and Chicago have a strong (arguably) defense - i.e. the "no-incorporation" defense?

Let's not forget Kennessaw [sic] GA. Murder free for 25 years.
Not true. Kennesaw has had a few murders in the last twenty-five years. One was related to a drug deal and happened near the U.S. Play on Barrett Parkway. I think this was in 2005 or 2006. The second was a domestic violence case where a woman was murdered by her ex-something. I clearly remember the latter because it happened about two miles from my house.

That being said, Kennesaw had very, very little violent crime. Kennesaw also hosted part of the carjacking and killing of the carjacker (who murdered his victim by colliding the stolen vehicle) by a man with a Georgia CCW.

Re: Guillermo
If there were many of the Aggies I know. in Ill., they would have kicked those idiot politicians out of office years ago. Luckily, most of us are still in Texas and WE still have our guns, concealed or otherwise. GIG'em

jfrey,

One thing I have to give Aggies is you do love your guns. And you usually vote conservative (ish)

In fact, except for bought-and-paid-for-Perry, your record is pretty good for public officials.

On the other side you did give us the incomparable Jerry Patterson!

It is the goat/sheep thing that most of us find offensive.

LOL! How am I supposed to learn about this with this kind of stuff?

Look, if you're not going to be serious there's no point in trying to help you learn.

I don't know if you recall that Bertrand Russell (British author, mathematician, and philosopher, 1872-1970) wrote: "There is no nonsense so arrant that it cannot be made the creed of the vast majority by adequate governmental action."
