Hey there.

Love this forum. Been lurking for a while soaking up as much info as I can.

Looking to spend a lot more time target shooting. Looking into some of the competition styles to see if it interests me.

Mainly shooting for family bonding reasons and I love it.

Question from the new guy:
Can anyone help me locate places to shoot in the NEPA area? Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Stroudsburg? Currently the only place I know of is a public range in Archabald, pa.

Thanks.

There's a free public range on state land in Goldsboro. It's off exit 13 off of route 380. If coming from the north, you'd turn right at the end of the ramp and follow that road the whole way until you get to the range. It's maybe 4-5 miles or so back in. There's 100, 200 yard rifle ranges, and a 25 yard (or so) hand gun range. I've gone there several times.

It's pretty good but it's best to go during off times like very early in the day or during the last hour or so of daylight. I've heard that weekends there are sort of like the wild west with a lot of people from NYC or Jersey, and some others have reported unsafe gun handling.

Thanks I appreciate it.

Those public ranges close at dusk correct?

I heard there was an indoor shooting range near tannersville but I havent found it online or anything just yet.

Yes they close at dusk. I don't know of the one in Tannersville. I heard that there was supposed to be an indoor range opening up in East Stroudsburg but never got any specifics on that. 12 or 15 years ago there was a pistol club that used the Stroudsburg High School indoor range but I don't know if they're even still around or not.

Also there's a gun shop on route 209 between Brodheadsville and Chestnuthill that may have a range. It's called American Sports Shooting or something like that. You could probably look them up and give them a call.

If you decide to check out the one in Goldsboro, really do try to go during the off hours (like weekday evenings) and maybe take a friend along. I've never had any problems there but one time this guy showed up and just "hung around." Made my neighbor's wife real uncomfortable. He wasn't there to shoot; was just sort of watching us for like 45 minutes or so. Was pretty weird actually. But it is a pretty decent range and it's free so that's where I go.

Hey!

Look into Wilkes-Barre Rifle and Pistol Club.

http://www.wbrp.org/

They do a lot of IDPA, Bullseye, High-Power, Smallbore, etc.

I was going up there for the Dec. 15 IDPA match but my plans fell through.

Welcome to THR, Crazyfeet. I'm from central PA and don't know anything about shooting in NEPA but I just wanted to say hi.

Thanks Guys!

I will call the place in wilkes and the place out near Brodheadsville. I new there was a range out there but I thought it was at a different shop.

I realized I just need to purchase some land that I can shoot on and set up my own lil range.

Getting some land and setting up your own range is great!

I'll offer this, though: I joined a shooting club some years back out of necessity as I couldn't find any public places to shoot in that area. I got lucky in that my club had a real solid core of good shooters who were welcoming and willing to share a lot of great advice and just plain comraderie, as well as organizing shooting leagues and competitions that provided goals and incentives to develop my skills. I found that I shot far more than I ever had and that my improvement was noticeable. I branched out and learned at least a little about several other shooting disciplines.

When I moved about a year ago, I landed on a property that I can shoot on -- at least a little -- if I so want. However, I immediately located the "best" shooting/sportsmen's club in my area and joined up. I wouldn't want to be without the community support, pressure to develop personally, and opportunities for organized competition afforded by a great club!

Some folks seem to like to remain solitary and do things their own way, but I've found that I thrive in a "family" of good, safe, conscientious, and supportive shooters far more than I do stumbling along left to my own devices.

Just some thoughts...your mileage definitely may vary with this.

In the short term I really hope to find a gun club I can join. I am just not sure which ones around me are open to new members. There is one in wilkes barre and one in factoryville both are relative close to me and I will look into both of them.

Crazyfeet, love THIS place, but be sure to visit the Pennsylvania Firearm Owners Association Forum to get very specific answers for your region. (PAFOA)

I am just an hour south of you.

Moderators, I hope this is OK. I have referred many more people to this site than vice-a-versa.

Factoryville has a pretty good reputation. Lots of IDPA up there.

Good luck!

If you start shooting IDPA we'll probably run into each other at a match sometime!

Hey there Crazyfeet. Like you I have been lurking also and need to introduce myself. I am in pike county and also have been looking for a range. I will want to check out the one in gouldsboro. Maybe we can say hey there sometime. I am about 15 min from the town itself.

Also, anyone from Pennsylvania should be signed up at the Pennsylvania Fireafms Owners Ass. forum. It is a FANTASTIC place for info and had a very dedicated group of shooters who can help.

Welcome Crazyfeet. I grew up in Tobyhanna, and spent a lot of time shooting at the range in Gouldsboro. It is a few miles off the beaten path, so to speak, but it is worth the trip. When I was a kid back in the 70s, we would all meet together at the school with our .22s :what:, and carpool up to the range, picking up tin can litter along the way. There is a small stream that runs across the road from the range, and we would fill the cans with water for some real fun plinking. Of course, we always cleaned up after ourselves. I don't think you would get away with that today though!

I live down in the Lehigh Valley now, but have been to the range up there a couple of times in the past few years. It was not long ago when the Feds busted a bunch of Islamic radicals who were practicing up there. Just don't say anthing about jihad and you should be okay.

I shoot at the Archbald mountain SGL range occasionally, a little bit of a haul for me but I like using the 200 yard line.

I also shoot High power at the Wilkes Barre Rifle and Pistol club, great place. I hope to get out to more events there as time and work allow, not a member though

I'm also in NE PA. I've never hit the state range, but have been to Sunset Hill in Tannersville/Henryville. It's closeby to the outlet malls. Not too bad of a place, but nothing great either.

Dunklebergers is supposed to be opening an indoor range in Stroudsburg over by Jiffy Lube/Shoprite. But I first heard of them doing it before the summer, and now it's early January. I hope it does open, as I'll start using it a lot, especially with the cold. I actually drive down to Allentown and the Firing Line to shoot indoors.

D-Man, when I was a kid back in the 70s, there were two ranges in the Henryville area, McCool's, and another, which name I forget now. McCool's pretty much just had paper targets, but the other place (Merry Hill or something like that?) had a whole bunch of steel targets to shoot at. I took my wife there to shoot when we were still dating. She was a city girl from Philly and had never even seen a gun in real life, much less shot one. I wonder if either of these are the one you mention, or if they are both gone with something else now.

I was at the range in archabald today for some early morning plinking. Great fun. Very windy but real nice.

I plan on going to sunset hill in the next week or so and making another trip or two out to archabald in the next week.
