Hey folks! I really appreciate all the time, effort, and excellent advice all of you have given me. I belong to a couple of other forums, and the folks there have been great, BUT...you gentlemen and ladies( if present ), have been overwhelming! I will post pics when I get my Mosin. Thanks to all!

Mosins

Don't be afraid to shoot it with the Pig sticker extended, especially if you go for the M44 or carbine variety. I have a 91/30 and a M44, recoil on each is not all that bad. Best advice is to really go for the best rifle'ing you can find. Then clean, clean, clean. First to get all the cosmoline out, second to get the bore shiney. I used J&B compound, grey is course, red is fine and this coupled with an electrolysis cleaning resulted in a bore that spits out 1 MOA rounds whether its high priced Wolf/Norma brand ammo, or el Cheapo 4 buck a pack corrosive. The difference in patterns is about 3/4's of an inch (This is with my 91/30 and after corking the barrel and tightening all screws). Finally, the 91/30 will shoot high(2") right (1") with the bayonet attached, and the pattern will be a little bigger. The M44 I have only has iron sights, and @100 yards holds a tighter pattern with the bayonet extended (albeit not as good as the 91/30 w or w/o bayonet).

I read somewhere that the bayonet is for deer hunting. You stick an apple on the end, and wait very quietly.

The recoil is not bad. I shoot 50-60 rounds of heavy ball through mine per range trip and my shoulder doesn't hurt, it wont break you shoulder like some people will have you believe, but it isn't a .22 either. Either way it is a rifle for under $100 with alot of history and cheap ammo, so even if you only fire 10 rounds per shooting session it is still worth it.

When I see a MN, I'm reminded of a cartoon that appeared at the time of the first joint Soviet/American space mission, where the two ships docked.

It showed a split screen, with the Americans and Russians going through their checklists.

On the American side:

"Millimeter wavelength radar?"

"Check"

"Backup Millimeter wavelength radar?"

"Check"

"Fifty gigabyte navagational computer?"

"Check"

And on the Russian side:

"Big potato?"

"Da!"

"Little potato?"

"Da!"

"Monkey Wrench?"

"Da!"

I love my M44. Some guy at the range was making cracks about how loud his muzzle loading pistol was compared to our "wussy guns" in 5.56 and 7.62x39. So I pulled out "Ole Bessy" and set his ass straight on what loud really was.

here's a video about me shooting my mosin 91/30, it's a little longer than my m44 but both shoot great, and the good thing is... for less than $100 you can get a new one if your mosin stop working lol.....

Threeband, I believe I originated that line:

I'm willling to be challenged on that assertion, but at least I thought of it independently a while ago. :)

And I know I stole it from somebody a while ago! I'll be glad to give you credit for it if I use it again.

(I have a mental image of Elmer Fudd, now that "wabbit" season is over, with his M44 and apple, saying, "Shhh! I'm hunting fow Bambi!")
