I bought the Tech Sights TSR100 for my 10/22, but I can't get the front sight off of my 10/22. I have a punch and a rubber mallet, but the sight will not budge. I've really wailed on it a couple of times, but I'm getting scared I'm going to scratch the barrel.

Any thoughts? Anyone else had issues with it? What can I do?

I had that same problem and my solution was a bigger hammer. Is it possible you are letting the barrel roll to one side until the front sight is touching the table? If so it would be like trying to hammer the sight through the table, just a thought. Good luck.

EDIT: Just looked at the link above, if you have a C clamp you could rig it up to work one way or another.

You don't need a gunsmith or a special tool.

Support the barrel and gun well. Use a brass punch preferably, and smack the punch (hold it securely !) driving the sight out from LEFT to RIGHT as you sight down the gun, like you're aiming it. Do not drive from right to left.

Use PB Blaster if it isn't coming out easy. Slowly and surely wins the race :)

You need to make the barrel so it can't move when you whack the sight. When I needed to remove a sight I would lay the slide or barrel on my carpeted floor and have my wife put her foot on it so it doesn't move. I then give it a whack. It has worked for me a few times. Mark

Strange that its so tight... when I installed my Tech Sights, it came out easy. Definitely make sure you are pushing it out the right way as mentioned above. Also, make sure that there is no movement in the barrel when you strike it. Also, use a hammer that has a solid metal striking surface and a brass punch to ensure that the energy is not dissipated by the rubber.

What Marbles said in post #7.

1. Support the barrel on a heavy block of wood, like a deck post or something non-moving, but also non-marring.
2. Use a Brass punch, or hardwood dowel.
3. Use a Steel hammer!

You can beat on it till you wear all the bluing off with a rubber hammer, and nothing much else is going to happen!

If you have a bench vice rap a rag around the barrel and put it in the vice not too tight and like rcmodel use a medal hammer it does not have to be too big i took my 1022 sights off with a 1lb carpet tack hammer.

I just went through this. My front and especially rear sights were really in there tight. The Tech Sights front sight didn't go in easy, either, Ruger's dovetail shaved metal from each of the three sides of the Tech Sights' dovetail.

Any time you punch something, you need:

1. A punch
2. Very solid support (steel preferrably) directly under whatever's being punched. Punching stuff out is harder than punching it in because of this.
3. A hammer that transfers energy well. I like brass and copper, but steel works well, too.

Here's how I did it...

Take the barrel off the receiver. {might not be necessary, but I was worried about damaging the aluminum receiver}
Attach a pair of vice grips to the front sight.
Tap on the pliers /w a hammer -- remember, it should come out FROM the left TO the right.

This will almost certainly trash the sight, but you could try wrapping it in tape or something to minimize the damage.

Mabye its lock tight that causing the problem. Take a blow torch to it for a few seconds and see if that helps.

Your having all this trouble getting this sight off but on my 10/22 it fell off. I have a bull barrel now so it doesn't matter. Mark

The same thing happened to me. I had the gunsmith put on the replacement sight I had to order.
