I posted this here because I want a RIFLEscope;I'm needing a new one for my 7 mag and one for that savage axis,I have narrowed it down to a 4-12 power for both of them and also narrowed down to these three: nikon prostaff with mil-dot reticle(midway usa exclusive),vortex diamondback or crossfire II,or a bushnell trophy xlt.I will also take other suggestions for scopes under $250.00.Oh and which company out of those three do you think has the best warranty and customer service.thanks in advance.

I haven't shot any of the scopes you listed, but only checked out the Bushnell and Nikon mounted on stock blanks at local stores. Of those, I'd take the Redfield Revolution. I know you didn't list it, but you should have. ;) Redfield/Leupold U.S. made quality, lifetime warranty, and I can tell you from using my 3-9x40 that they are excellent scopes, even at list price. They currently have a $30 rebate going, which will bring the 4-12x40 that you want down to the $190ish range (Dicks had them for $139 on black Friday via a 25% off any item in the store plus the $30 Redfield rebate, but the 25% off is gone now).

what do you plan to do with it. I have the Prostaff 4-12 and I dont really like it for huntin. The field of view seems small to me, even on 4x, and no good to find your target quickly. It's good glass and clear on the bench though

I prefer the Revolution for huntin cause of the thick cross hairs.

Not included, but I would prefer a used VX2 over all these.

Go to a 3-9X Leupold VariX2 and don't look back. The field of view and clarity are well worth the extra 50 bucks!!! You'll probably be much happier than with a 4-12s that you suggested.

I have a 4.5-14X Mueller on my .223 rem Tikka and though it's very clear, I very much dislike having to adjust parallax on a hunting rifle.

The rangefinder reticles, to me are not very fast to use. I just sight in, using computer ballistics programs, so the bullet doesn't rise or drop more than 3 inches out to 250 or 300 yards, depending on cartridge. I don't want to shoot most game much beyond 300 yards unless I have a laser rangefinder with me and have the time to use it. If game is hit that far away, it's sometimes very difficult to find the location where it was when hit. Often, there's no blood for several yards.

I have no personal experience with your choices so take my input for the simple opinion it is. I have been researching scopes to upgrade my axis as well and have settled on a Cemterpoint. For me it's the 4-16x40 adventure class. I have found only one or two bad reviews by people who have ACTUALLY owned them, even though many are quick to flame them simply on their price tag along. Which by the way they can be had for about $70 at most Walmarts or online (for the model I want). There are MANY different configurations and variations to to fit almost anyone's needs. I at least encourage you to check them out. UTG, Leapers, and Centerpoint all appear to be the same company FYI.

Best of luck.

Redfield Revolution 4-12x40 (with accu-range reticle in my case). $219 before $30 rebate. Made by Leupold in the same plant in Oregon and has both the same quality and 'no questions asked' lifetime warranty.

I own a Prostaff 4-12 and it's okay, nice and bright. But I think Redfield gets better reviews in the price range.

What is your intended purpose? Any kind of 4-12x sounds like way too much glass for your average deer rifle. If this is a big game rifle, I would strongly suggest a smaller, yet higher quality scope like the aforementioned Leupold VXII. Spend your money on optical quality, not magnification you don't really need.

Based on your listed scopes, I'd have to suggest the Bushnell Trophy. I don't know if you will be impressed with the Vortex until you step it up to the Viper Line. The diamond backs and crossfires i've seen are ok, but not better than the trophy.

I went with the Nikon Monarch 3-12x44mm BDC for my 338 WinMag in anticipation of an Arizona elk hunt, very clear at the edges, side focus and it's very good in low light situations. I plan on getting another for my 30-06.

Check out Optics Planet for current pricing. :)

Re: the Revolution's crosshair thickness, the AccuRange is thicker, the 4-Plex is pretty thin. That's one reason I favor the 4-Plex - works better for me on targets or distant small game if going for pinpoint accuracy.
